During the last days leading up to the Scotland vote pro Irish Republican students at Queens University Belfast were encouraged to organise a similar vote to guage student support for a United Ireland

Their divisive and deeply controversial vote got under way this morning at 9am and finished at 5pm this evening. According to a report on UTV thls evening the result is a total disaster for it’s organisers Sinn Fein.

Of those eligible to cast votes, 90% stayed away of the 24,000 students eligible to vote and refused to take part thus turning the whole exercise into an embarrassing fiasco for pro republican party.

Of the 10% who turned out

1285 voted AGAINST a UNITED IRELAND

1264 were FOR a UNITED IRELAND

A victory FOR the pro Union vote by 21 votes

There was a rival vote organised by those who didn’t want the institution turned into a sectarian university for Irish republicans only. It attracted a total of 2596 voters for with 409 against meaning this is now mandatory policy for the Students Union to adhere to.

Strangely whist the pro union voters put up a spokeswomann no one was available from Sinn Fein to make any comments.

I'm a bit surprised the vote was almost neck-and-neck, closer than the Scottish referendum.

Since 90% of the students didn't bother to vote, I think that means not many really give a damn one way or the other. Rather like the membership of UKDEBATE.
