Britain is the most prosperous of the big economies in the European Union, a major report finds today, but is still behind countries like Switzerland and Norway which chose not to join the bloc. Legatum Institute's 2014 Prosperity Index reveals Norway as the most prosperous country in the world, with Switzerland at number two in the list.

Quote:

The UK is ranked at number 13, three places higher than last year's index, and one spot ahead of Germany. France came 21st in the list, Spain 26th and Italy 37th, while Russia is the worst performing country in Europe, falling seven places to 68th.

Quote:

The survey also found that the UK is a world-leader for entrepreneurship, coming 8th in the list, and that British people are some of the most charitable.
The study shows It found 74 per cent of Brits donate to charity, the 4th highest in the index, compared to just 42 per cent in Germany and 26 per cent in France.

LINK

Those earning $25,000 (£15,643) a year in the UK take home 88.22pc of their wages, compared to the average of 82.17pc in Western Europe.

Not such a bad sh1t-hole relatively speaking. Considering we are not in the EZ with all it's ongoing problems that have, seemingly, no solution, the UK is well placed as a modern mature democracy.

"What selfish fools like you have done is ruin this country by criticising decency and the moral obligations that benefit society and ensure that what little talent we still possess is diluted even further."

Dumbing down and a race to the bottom by Labour has done it's level best to achieve that aim.
The dumbing down process must have started when you were a kiddie Rich! Judging by the evidence you present.
Based on your postings here, if that passes for statistically sound evidence which it clearly does for you, then this went into overdrive in more recent times. In fact it appears that most under 40 year olds have been blighted and to such an extent they are ignorant of their shortcomings. Touche.
Well if its evidence, statistical or otherwise, one is after. Then your own postings regularly provide very little that can be verified at all. Two little old adages ring true in your case:

The one about pot and kettle black and the other about stones and glass houses!

Touche!

Sadly your opinions have become worthless according to a fair few of us on here now, what with your inability to read links and a debilitating mental affiction than manifests itself as petulant arrogance.

Oh, and have you been doing a bit of DIY in five star London hotel? ;-)

Segregating a minority of children at the early age of 11 to provide them with a proper education as part of a selection for third level education on the basis of an exam is both ludicrous and discriminatory. It is morally indefensible to do this at taxpayers' expense.
The is no need to select on the basis of examination, this could be a decision largely influenced by parents and the schools. I am all for easy free flow between schools as some kids will change direction of interests and others will not cope with wrong agendas. However, the thrust should be to satisfy parental demands even the wrong ones, rather that follow that dictated by Politicians. I want to see the authority of children's education placed with parents and not usurped by Big Nanny State. One of the big problems today is that Big Nanny has usurped much of the role of individual parents and left them wondering what they are for. If you want a society where the individual takes more responsibility for his/her life's choices, which I do, then best let them be involved in such.
The state is responsible for state schools. The wealthy upper middle class can do what they like with their own money as long as adequate standards are maintained. Children are citizens too.
Exactly, I wish to uncouple the dead hand of the State for the benefit of children citizens.

Ask a simple question get an unnecessarily rude response.

Thanks Affa I'll return the courtesy when I can be bothered.

I apologise, it was remiss of me when I read again what I presented.
Sincerely, sorry for the offence!

It's just that not more than a week ago I made the same response to the suggestion that Labour, that the TUC, are closet communists. You were not making that claim, so I was wrong to think you were.
It's sordid politicking imo to try to discredit political opponents by wrongly labelling them as something nasty.

Are Communists nasty? I have met many over the years and they struck me to be decent types. That said in early post war period the TUC was stuffed out with Communist types, they were proud of their beliefs and did not seek to hide them. I did not agree with their politics, but could respect them for stating theirs with conviction. Today the slim-balls hide their views because they are ashamed of them. Why? Why do you think that Communists and I assume their fellow travellers the Socialists are nasty people? Deluded yes, nasty I think not.

That has changed where I live for just the Christmas period:-

http://www.falmouthpacket.co.uk/news/11630796.Brownies_to_help_collect_for_Helston_and_Lizard_Food_Bank_at_Tesco/

First published 09:00 Friday 28 November 2014 in News .

Collections are being taken at Helston’s Tesco supermarket for the area’s food bank.

Customers are being asked to donate an item of food or toiletries when they do their shopping, which will be distributed by the Helston and The Lizard Food Bank to those struggling to make ends meet.
Normally the charity asks for non-perishable food items, but as this collection is Christmas related then festive fare such as mince pies are acceptable provided the date stretches to the end of December.

This Saturday, between 10am and 5pm, Brownies and Scouts from the town will be in store packing bags for shoppers in return for a donation of money for the charity.

Those earning $25,000 (£15,643) a year in the UK take home 88.22pc of their wages, compared to the average of 82.17pc in Western Europe.

Could you live on low income of £15,643 a year? That is borderline existence.

Of course you do, why should they vote for anything other than a Party which promises to give them even more free money? Makes no sense. I wonder how many would take up the option of swapping UK benefits for those elsewhere in the EU. Germany is a big country, a relatively successful one so why we not exporting Claimants there? I wonder?
The truth is that the UK is a very generous country.

You mean NEW labour, not labour. The difference is massive.

I don't know? Did they? Are you asking or as I suspect, implying? Do you have the figures?

Over, say, the past 50 years, which political party has the banking sector donated the most money to? If that doesn't provide you with the obvious truth about the ties between bankers and Tories then you're blind to the bleedin' obvious.

Yes they did. During the boom years an NL looking the other way Bankers creamed it in, today their bonuses are only a fraction of what it once was. In fact bashing Bankers is the favourite pastime of the left in order that they can deflect criticism of their tribe in Gov. Bashing Bankers has run it's course and is now no longer productive, but it was a helpful smoke-screne whilst it lasted.

Are you real?
The Bankers have gotten off light, have escaped largely unharmed.
The smoke screen they hid behind was put up to blame Gordon Brown for what they did ....... and that still hasn't run its final course.
Now compare to the 'bashing' of Trade Unions ....... Tories are still trying to get 'production' out of that THIRTY years after their humiliating defeat.

Quote:

In 2010, the welfare budget including pensions stood at £188 billion. This year it is £208 billion. If it had simply kept pace with inflation it would be just over £210 billion. In other words, it has scarcely been reduced.

Quote:

Andrew Hood, author of the report, examined every Budget and Autumn Statement since 2010. He found that the Government had planned cuts to welfare of £19 billion — a relatively modest figure given the whopping size of the budget — but in fact achieved only a measly £2.5 billion.

Quote:

In addition, spending on some benefits which were supposed to fall has actually risen since 2010. The cost of housing benefit went up by £700million because rents are higher and incomes lower than expected, and so the Government has dug deeper into its pockets to help out.

Quote:

More surprising still, the cost of Disability Living Allowance has risen by £1.6 billion over the past four years despite the Government’s attempt to reassess people’s ability to work, which has earned it bitter criticism from special interest lobby groups and the Left-wing media.

Since 2013, most working-age benefits and tax credits have been pegged to an annual increase of 1 per cent, though with inflation falling this has proved to be less painful than many commentators predicted.

One has to wonder what all the fuss is about? Compared with most countries in the EU those on welfare in the UK are treated with generosity and it looks like the Gov. have done much to ameliorate the effects of the recession. Where are these 600,000 dead we should be falling over in the streets?

Oh Dear RJD; you should think before posting.

I did. The fact that Brown cast the die back in 2008 and now the majority of those who were at the helm at that time have now gone is sufficient. The regulatory authority has changed, the system has changed, there is less risk today than 4 years ago and the UK has done well in recent stress tests. Of course there is more to do, there always will be. But I note that the two Eds are still in place and one of them, the fatter one, was the architect of past regulatory failure. Why is he still on the Opposition front bench, if he was a Banker he would have, quiet rightly, been hounded out.

The Trade Unions were castigated for their dreadful anarchistic performance in the 1960s and 70s. They are today less relevant however the Neanderthals in the Public Sector Unions are still with us.

I'd like to see some proof of this, from what I understand the good times have been back for quite a while now.
