Anything goes, new or old, blockbuster or indie, as long as you enjoyed them. I've given up reading the critics reviews on movies beforehand because too often I think ''Did they even watch the same film as me?'' I'll recommend Out Of The Furnace starring Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck. A story of loyalties , family and good people dealt bad hands in America's blue collar Rust Belt. This film won't be for everybody. It can be rather grim, with a small town struggling with de-industrialisation and the recession. There is no glamour, but there are glimmers of hope. I won't put it up there against The Deer Hunter as that is a classic, but there are similarities. Can you recommend any movies to watch? |

Subtitled, which puts some off, but the Chinese epic Red Cliff is a must watch imo. There is a shortened version of the near five hour long two part Eastern version released for Western audiences. It is historically accurate, characters etc realy did exist, but does suffer a little from the Hollywood effect of dramatic license distorting the motives. As a an action movie it is first rate. As a drama movie it works well, but for me it was the political and social aspects most intriguing. I've watched both versions, the Western version basically writes out one of the minor characters, a female. Did I say how clever it is, how it connects together, how brilliant the tactics were? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Cliff_%28film%29 Edited by Affa, Dec 29 2014, 08:35 PM.

Another enjoyable movie. I believe has been redone in Hollywood, but I saw this a few years ago and thought it brilliant, funny, and provocative too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Sassy_Girl As you will note my tastes are varied. .......... and I do watch a lot of the American releases, most if truth be told. Watched the Divergence movie, then read the three books ......... Go Tris! |

Cheers Affa. I just had a quick look for Red Cliff on the PSN store but it's not there for download, so I'll look in HMV etc, when in town. Oblivion was better than I thought it would be, not seen Edge of Tomorrow. And is the Divergence movie same as the Divergent movie? I'm not being a smart-arse I just not heard of it, but have spotted Divergent on the PSN store. Edited by Marconi, Dec 29 2014, 09:04 PM.

For Martial arts fans and anybody who like me can admire athleticism (gymnastics) that defies belief (no fly by wires here). A British former fighter turned movie actor, Scott Adkins ........ ever heard of him? His defining talent best seen in Undisputed II: Last Man Standing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undisputed_II:_Last_Man_Standing Edited by Affa, Dec 29 2014, 09:01 PM.

You may have seen the Black Stallion but if not it is like poetry on film, the underwater shots are to die for and a nice surprise to see Mickey Rooney near the middle/end of the movie. It was on a local channel the other night and everyone was telling me to watch it and the were right a ***** five star movie if there ever was one. Not the typical horse movie at all. |

Severed Ways: The Norse Discovery Of America Filmed by independent movie makers, on their own land in Vermont. The movie is beautiful in some ways, brutal in others, some may not like the anachronistic use of modern music in a film that is in many ways shot in an almost documentary fashion, but I thoroughly enjoyed the film. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Severed_Ways All The Best |

Here is the full movie I mentioned I'm afraid it's not in English and I have looked for it in English and it only comes in pits of the entire movie and would ruin it to watch it that way. Very little talking in the first half of the movie and it is beautiful. Edited by LillyBee, Dec 30 2014, 12:09 AM.

Well. the critics panned it as formulaic, but I have to say, having NOT seen the first two of the series, Mrs JoG and I went to the cinema (!) on boxing day and saw the third in the "Night In The Museum" series and thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe if I had seen the first two I might have thought differently. The only thing that pissed me off was the (Cineworld) venue had taken out its bar and replaced it with a Starbucks. Blockbusters ? Not sure they were "blockbusters" but I did enjoy Inception http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1375666/ and the final seconds of the film really does leave you thinking, and for the ultimate happy ending in a film that I wouldn't call "sci-fi" because it isn't what I would call science fiction, although it requires one large lump of fictional science to work, I give you "The Source Code" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0945513/ At COMPLETELY the other end of the scale, last year I went to see two films my GRANDMOTHER would have gone to see in her youth. The British Film Foundation (?) had Hitchcock's 1929 film "Blackmail" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0019702/ and William Wellman's 1928 film "Beggars of Life" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0018684/ rescued and "digitaly remastered" (in this case to restore them from the degradation prevalent on the copies you can find on "youtube" if you look hard enough. Both were SILENT, the first shown to a new score performed by the Bournemough Symphony Orchestra, the second to a score improvised on the spot by a "militant skiffle band" called The Dodge Brothers who took the last Glasto Festival's Film Tent by storm, so I am told. Blackmail in particular shows Hitchcock trying out the sort of thing that would ultimately make his name, the film gets a PG certificate despite its plotline of rape, murder and corruption in police circles because the "action" is entirely in the mind of the audience. Divergent, 'course it is the same. I enjoyed Divergent, read the books, and honestly cannot say that I expect the next films to be as enjoyable as the first was. The story gets dark and with less development of the characters ...... a tired continuation of a good opening tale. Edge of Tomorrow I feel sure is due for showing on TV on New Years Day - saw it advertised unless my mind is playing tricks with me. Could be Sky, I'm not sure. I can't find the Tom cruise movie on any scheduling lists ..... bother!! You liked Oblivion, you will enjoy EoT. Retitled Live Die Repeat I understand ..... Edited by Affa, Dec 30 2014, 10:32 AM.

Here is another that won so many awards. The Notebook is a 2004 American romantic drama film directed by Nick Cassavetes and based on the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. The film stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams |

Not often seen on broadcast TV because of the political events, but I highly recommend the fast paced political thriller Z about the pre cursor events that led to the Greek Colonels coup Very hard to watch that to the end and not feel your blood pumping fast. You just never notice that it's in French with subtitles ![]() |

Caused me to wonder ........ how can someone who is stirred by this movie not realise that our own government (I'd prefer to say State, but few would recognise what it actually is) are equally as capable of extreme measures in order to preserve itself and the status quo. The greater the threat, the more extreme they can become. |

Those of you that are movie buffs and are on this thread will most likely recognize the name 'Roger-Ebert' who was one of a two man team in the U.S. who gave many who looked for it the quality of the movie as he saw it. Tomorrow night there will be a CNN movie 9pm Est about his life called 'Life Itself' if any of you are interested. Edited by LillyBee, Jan 3 2015, 12:28 PM.

It was remiss of me not to mention earlier that I too had seen Out of the Furnace which does indeed draw much of its story from the Deer Hunter, including locations in the US. And I did give it a high personal rating as time well spent. Both my sons went on about it for days ....... |

This is an oldie but goodie if there ever was one. Gary Cooper does not play a cowboy but, don't let that disappoint you one bit. If this isn't in your 'Bucket' of things to do or watch, you must add it. He is Brilliant/Magnificent and more. He gives a speech that everyone alive should be so lucky to hear. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0027996/ |

Advertised as being on Film 4 from 9.00pm this Wednesday 11th Feb, Byzantium, a British movie that I think worth a look Not your usual vampire movie, one set in modern England (South Coast). Not a horror movie, a drama in which the two female leads continue the British tradition of fine acting. No social commentary here, not much anyhow, just an exercise in story telling with a few twists. Edited by Affa, Feb 7 2015, 11:18 PM.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1531901/ review ........ Byzantium is more a study of being human than being vampire and holds the attention easily with strong lead performances. At the center is actually a mother daughter relationship, a question of nature versus nurture and survival. As well as all the vices of humankind thrown in for good measure. In this movie the vampires are all human, albeit changed and remain human, albeit enhanced but at a cost and within the shadows of normal living. Life and death of course are issues and living,if we could live forever would we rise above what we are? Questions within. Really enjoyed this and good to see Saiorse Ronan back on form after that terrible Alien outing. Gemma Arterton also puts in a great performance. This is billed as a vampire movie however I'd recommend it to anyone as although the elements are there its very far from what you'd expect of a movie of that genre. Keanu Reeves is back on form, in very much the Constantine character (though not an evangelist) in John Wick. Cool and in control. Here he is a hit man forced out of retirement after an assault on his home ...... and he is awesome. I also enjoyed him in 47 Ronin, though it will not be to everyone's taste. Not so much a typical Samurai movie, more a study in their culture and Japanese heritage, their code of honour. Based on an actual historical event. Edited by Affa, Mar 9 2015, 02:54 AM.

I sort of guessed what was going on very early. So there were not many surprise elements to come. I enjoyed it, though I paid little attention to the underlying message in regards to man's inhumanity - that left me cold. Scorsese has his own style and this was it ....... he makes the viewer have to think, and I like that. Do I rate it highly? Not Really high .... but high enough to recommend it to those that like mystery and appreciate good acting. |

Don't miss the more the merrier, if there ever was a movie that deserved all the awards it got it is that one. It's about how hard it was to find a place to rent during the 40's and the creative things that this movie gives you mind to so one could laugh their sides off. |
