Anything goes, new or old, blockbuster or indie, as long as you enjoyed them.
I've given up reading the critics reviews on movies beforehand because too often I think ''Did they even watch the same film as me?''

I'll recommend Out Of The Furnace starring Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck.
A story of loyalties , family and good people dealt bad hands in America's blue collar Rust Belt.

This film won't be for everybody. It can be rather grim, with a small town struggling with de-industrialisation and the recession. There is no glamour, but there are glimmers of hope.

I won't put it up there against The Deer Hunter as that is a classic, but there are similarities.

Can you recommend any movies to watch?

I overlooked watching Kajaki ...... will do tonight.

They should show this film in Westminster after PMQs with none allowed to leave.

You MUSTsee the new Pixar movie "Inside out" . It is a kids animation but the movie was clearly written for adults and by Behaviourist Psychiatrists, I would say.

MUST SEE !

On one of my rare visits to the cinema, we recently went to see "the Martian", as it had some good reviews. It's not too bad, really. The effects were good, but the plot required the viewer to suspend credulity to a ridiculous extent to accept. Too full of "Deus ex machina" moments to be really enjoyable.

Well, believe it or not the last film I watched in a cinema was Dr Zhivago, I cannot even recall how long ago that occasion was.

Tonight Film4, Shutter Island.
A psychological drama that is worth viewing - and especially relevant to understanding how reality and perceived reality are confused ........ the latter being often a result of misleading and false information. The sort of manipulation practiced by government and State.

Yeah, seen it.

Thought it was OK but a bit overly manipulative in the plot-twist.

Now, it's not a movie, but the ongoing DC series Arrow is very good viewing IMO, far more "grown up" than most of the Marvel output.

For anyone interested in Le Carre's take on the bank crisis - his linking Banks to organised crime and the Political involvement that allowed it.
'Our Kind of Traitor'
IMDB

Not a complex tale on the scale of his best work, but an enjoyable enough story that revolves around Russian Oligarchs moving money to the 'City'.

Dunno if I've done this before, but found it again on a random listing.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2381941/

Focus, with Will Smith and, well, some other guys.

Well written scam flick - would you have fallen for the last one?

I shall watch tonight. I like M Robbie, good actress. She and Will Smith are teamed up again in 'Suicide Squad' recently released. That too is worth a watch - if you're into Marvel Comic capers.

Ta will look out for it. Not available via Sky yet.

Strangely for a film that got good reviews (link) it doesn't seem to have had much of a cinema release here and I'd not heard of it.

It's a Film4 production and I'm guessing will not follow the usual Sky, Netflix rout.
However it is out on DVD .......

I don't know if I've ever mentioned this before, but the 2001 Korean (original version) My Sassy Girl is an hilarious and romantically sentimental movie that out shines its imitation from Hollywood. A rare thing for me is seeing it a number of times. Few movies are that good.

How is The Joker played out in that movie, Affa? Hard to top Heath Ledger 's version I imagine.

Jared Leto, the Joker, is an odd one. Not entirely convincing in the part imo, but the script/plot-line is insane.

In my experience most films are boring on planes.

Nope , I disagree

Most decent airlines have some good recent release films alongside the boring , the dross and niche movies

I'd categorise Our Kind of Traitor as boring dross ( but people have differing tastes and some like boring dross)

Ewan Mcgregor is there for his name only

Ewan McGregor and his star profile are here by default. He goes along with it all, in a totally unobjectionable but standard Ewan McGregor performance – blokeish, competent, compliant. After the first half-hour, Makepeace’s relevance is awkwardly up for grabs.

So last night we went to see Tim Burton's latest dark offering: Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children

Weird on so many levels with a slightly laboured first half and a stonking second half with Samuel L Jackson at his menacing best hamming it up. Also wonderfully sick in parts so why somebody thinks it's OK for kiddiewinks with parents just defeats me.

All in all 3 stars out of 4 from me.

Weird on so many levels .........

That's Tim Burton's trademark.

He's like Marmite ......... but he does know how to direct both camera crew and and those in front of it.

..... if you ever had or bought a Cabbage Patch doll - there's another in the Tim Burton mpould - Patch Town IMDB. Another not for kids (or impressionable Adults).

I am sat here watching a documentary called "An Eye For An Eye" on Amazon Prime.

It is about a man called Mark Stroman who, in the wake of 9/11, killed two people and wounded a third simply because they looked "Arab".
He was portrayed in the media as a "white supremacist" even though he had African American and Mexican friends.

It is a very powerful film, disturbing and moving in equal measure.
Given recent attacks in the UK I would suggest this film has lessons we should choose to learn by proxy, rather than by deed.

If you haven't seen it yet, go see Dunkirk. It is a different kind of movie, more like virtual reality. There is very little dialog. Often it is cut off mid-sentence by something "happening" to squaddies who mostly have no idea of what is happening.

It's by far, the best war movie that I've ever seen. No glory ... just what you or I might do to survive.

p.s. Pay the extra ££ and watch it in 70mm IMAX with the best sound that you can find.

The director captured all of that. No derring-do or self-glorification to be found. There is no "debunking" either. I was on the edge of my seat, watching this movie.

Recently this film was shown on an obscure Freeview channel. I had never seen the film before, (which surprised me.)
The full version is on YouTube:-

https://paradata.org.uk/content/theirs-glory-1946

Theirs Is the Glory (1946)

"They have written in letters of fire an immortal page of history. Their manner of passing shall be carried like a banner borne high by all those who shall come after. Their story will be told wherever men cherish deeds of good report. The story of those filthy, grimy, wonderful gentlemen who drop from the clouds and fight where they stand. Just Ordinary Men."

The film Theirs Is the Glory, produced in 1946, was the first significant effort to chronicle the gallant stand of the British 1st Airborne Division, including 2 Wings of the Glider Pilot Regiment and the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade Group in the Battle of Arnhem (Operation Market Garden) which lasted from 17 September to 25 September 1944. It preceded the epic film A Bridge Too Far by 31 years.
