The only holidays my wife and I have in Britain is going to motorcycle rallies, anything else is far too expensive.

Are you saying you go abroad because it's cheaper or you don't take holidays?

I enjoyed my few days in Oxford in April because of the colleges, good ale, pub food and the history.

Cheaper to go abroad, the cost of accommodation in Britain is at times bordering on the hilarious.

Over 15 years ago my wife purchased an old mobile home for next to eff all, sited within a stones throw of the sea on the North Western tip of Brittany.
The site costs are about a 1/4 what they are in the UK, and when were are there (about six weeks a year,) the cost of living is well below that of the UK.
Because we are "property owners" we get a 25% discount on Brittany Ferries fares. A free or 1/2 price cabin depending on if it is a day or night crossing, a free breakfast and/or a discount on meals purchased on board.
There really is no contest when it comes to the cost differential, The UK is just too expensive for us to take a holiday.

yes expensive it certainly is

So much of the UK is good to see in short doses. We recently did Tintagel for 2 nights and it was great, a third night would have been too long. We did St Michaels Mount as a day's run and it deserved longer

But the three best places in the UK to have a short break: The Lake District, London if you can afford it and above all Edinburgh

We love the Gower peninsula and Dorset, I have been to Scotland many times but have never holidayed there, our camping days are over as the two boys are more interested in "other" things these days, ;-) nonetheless I can certainly recommend either of those two locations.

Off to Skye in a few weeks and really looking forward to it.

I cannot remember the last time I stayed in a hotel in the UK for pleasure, we normally rent a cottage and try to avoid peak holiday times as the cost can then be very reasonable.

That's a view that many take and we have in the past found it to be true in some cases but I think sometimes people claim that and it's not the case particularly when you look at self catering holidays.

The UK does struggle to compete on the hotel with some board arrangements, I think it's down to economy of volume and length of season. Massive Spanish hotels with a climate that attracts people all year round leaves UK hotels that are often much smaller in a climate that is not the best struggling.

Tints gel a place we have never visited, done some of Cornwall, enjoyed that would revisit and maybe have a look at Tintangel next time.

The Lake District I agree and love it there. London for a short break yes it's a very different break for us we tend to avoid the big city. Now Edinburgh I don't like at all, maybe it's because we love the more remote parts of Scotland, Edinburgh does nothing for me.

Wales we find is our marmite country, we have visited so many places and have never had an ok experience it's alway we love it or hate it, some amazing locations we love and some we were glad to get out of. Gower peninsular is on the to do list, we did enjoy a stay near Morfa Nefyn On the LlÅ·n Peninsula

Scotland, love it, done it from top to bottom, love the highlands.

Now you are talking, love the Scottish islands and some of the beaches are amazing, even on the mainland. We have seen beaches in Scotland and the islands that put many in Spain to shame, if only they had the sun to go with them they would be over run with tourists, so glad they don't get that much sun. Stood on many a Scottish beach and not seen another person as far as you can see, amazing place.

London, yes if you want to swing to the other way to experience a man made jungle, and we do from time to time and enjoy it but for us it's a short break not a place we would want to spend a week or two in.

I live on the beach, so prefer to look at castles and countryside when I'm off for a break.

My fav is probably walking in areas with waterfalls.

I recommend the Monsal trail in the peak district.

I like Northumberland....Lots of history, beautiful scenery, the Cheviots and deserted beaches.

I don't like the whole "seaside" thing usually....but like castles, crashing waves and windswept hills.

I agree that when the weather is fine the Northumberland coast is superb. The harbour dolphins and seals at Seahouses, Lindisfarne if you catch the tide right, Bamburgh Castle, and all the beautiful fine white sandy beaches with the large tussocked dunes a little inland.

Used to take the kids camping. If its too rainy.. you just go home and come back later.
There is lots you can do with children that don't cost a lot of money.

Theme parks were a very rare treat.....and I wouldn't have been able to afford those prices.

My parents didn't have a lot of money..we used to fish..look through rock pools..go exploring..

Kids won't do that these days though..they are lost without computer games and the television..

Yes; my childhood was the happiest time of my life and we had very little - holidays was a day trip to Cleethorpes on the train.

As I am due two holidays this year, one in Amsterdam, and then the following week in Cornwall, I shall be pleased to report back soon on which is best, sort of. As Jezza might say.

 !bgrin!
