Any fans of the genre on here care to help me out a bit. With a 30 minute drive to and from work I'm grabbing whatever I can that's spoken as opposed to sung to hold my attention on the commute. I dug out a couple of ancient cassette recordings (remember those) and with the help of a gizmo I now have a load of MP3's. This particular tale - Towards Zero - seems to have a plot malfunction. During their investigation of a murder, the police find a dark blue suit hidden in a wardrobe. It has hair and blood on it. The suit is discovered the day after the deed is done, in rooms in the house where the victim was killed. The suit forms part of a collection of damning evidence actually planted by the murderer to point the finger at himself so that his crafted alibi, when sprung, will throw the plod into confusion. So far, so good. But in the "final reel" of this story we are introduced to a man with a similar dark suit, staying at a hotel across the river from the murder scene, who takes his suit to a cleaners and when they fail to clean it on time, he takes "his" suit away. Except he is not given his suit, he is given the one the murderer used when committing the murder. And furthermore, we find a key factor is the stench of decayed fish from a stained area in the fabric, caused by the murderer stripping off his suit int he dark and stuffing it behind some rocks on the beach before he swims the river do the deed and swims back, then entering the hotel - but reeking of dead fish which he blames on the drains - to set up his alibi Leaving aside the preposterous concept of the police allowing a key piece of evidence to be released before the trial, why pray was the house in which this jacket was found not stunk to high heaven with rotting fish. The story is on in which Hercules Poirot features only in the mind of the Superintendent helping out with the sleuthing. A good job too. I can hear the "Mon Dieu ! What a Wanker my creator has been with this plot line" now ! Edited by johnofgwent, Oct 14 2015, 07:10 PM.
