Surely the answer is in your own post. "but officials say it will save taxpayers money "

I'm rather persuaded by this

Quote:

A source said the PM's flights, using either Royal Squadron planes or long haul charter, cost on average £6,700 per flying hour and the RAF aircraft would cost £2,000. It would be available for refuelling when it wasn't in use.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-34864328

Can anyone rebut that?

As I understand the plane already exists, the £10m is the refitting costs.

If, as claimed, it cuts the cost/hr by a third it probably makes sense to do this - as long as the £775,000 / year saving times number of years in service adds up to more than £10m.

So it'd need to be in use for what... ...12.5 years?

Seems plausible to me.

I suspect there's a security issue too using charter aircraft

Yeah, was thinking of that as well.

A gov't owned, maintained, and operated place is going to offer much greater security than any charter plane can.

Given recent events it probably makes sense for the gov't to have its own plane, even if doing so cost more than the current system.

Seems you won't really be happy until Cameron's a homeless beggar. ;-)

Like it or not (and I don't) he was elected as PM and needs to travel abroad to do what the electorate wanted.

Did Tony not want the Gov. to invest in BLAIR ONE?

Looks to me that this Gov. is seeking to do a sensible job on the cheap. I like the way they try not to waste Taxpayer's Money.

I won't be happy until he puts the country first rather than himself and his cronies..What a piece iof shit he is to run our country., If he did what the electorate wanted we would be outr of the EU now and immigration would be stopped at a stroke..

Considering the number of air-miles Cameron has racked up, it should be a good investment.

He should have ordered one of these.

The AS2, a 170-ft. long needle-shaped, three-engine jet capable of hitting speeds over 1,200MPH – about Mach 1.5. The idea is to test fly the jet by 2021 -- which can handle about 12 passengers -- and have it in service by 2023.

Could call it Osborne One.

I agree, a perfect place to snort coke off a black woman's teats while pretending to be dutifully doing his job helping the country.

So the £10 million is just the refitting costs for Scam Force One.

What about the running costs comprising fuel, maintenance, staffing and insurances. How does that compare with the alternatives?

There are still plenty of serviceable Tiger-Moths in existence, surely in the interests of the tax payer and austerity you'd support the vast savings that a perfectly good piston engined aircraft would deliver over a turbo fan propelled Flatulent Nanny extravagance?

This is a collectors item please cherish it! !bgrin!

The government has concluded that using privately owned aircraft is too expensive so what do they do?

Yes that's right get the state to supply and run the aircraft because, THE TORY GOVERNMENT CLAIMS IT WILL BE CHEAPER!

Any chance of this policy being rolled out in other areas?

;-)
