Good humour or total disaster?

Maybe he expected the joke to backfire. Who knows.

The Tories howled "more more" and Ozzy said "the shadow cab have been sent for re-education". A sharp retort that may well have crushed the shadow chancer's fragile ego.

Overall it looks like a Tory PR win to me. The mental weakness of McDonnell shone through.

Got to say he didn't come out of it looking good, maybe Corbyn could have pulled it off

It appears Mr McDonnell cast a pearl before swine. Anyone who has seen what Chinese ownership of foreign assets end up like knows the Tory government is mad selling any assets to the Chinese. (Unless of course a few Tory minister have a pecuniary interest or are set to make a fast buck.)

It says something that so many people have spectacularly missed Mcdonnell's point.

I don't think the point was missed just that the method of delivery was ridiculed successfully.

Good humour if he had got away with it maybe but the reply left him with a total disaster.

He did not realise how thick his audience is.

In truth an impromptu response to such a long detailed statement of intent is nigh on impossible. Clearly McD had crafted his response well in advance based on the leaks, which were copious, and he came across with a heavy dose of empty sound-bites. Of course we all want apple-pie and cream, but we also want to know how to get some. It is all very well criticising the Chancellor for not ridding us of the humongous deficit, but not from the shaky platform of rejection of all cuts. If he thinks economic growth alone will rid us of the deficit then how many more decades will we have to wait for this most unlikely event? If anyone is illiterate in the art of Economics it is surely the most un-dynamic of duos, namely, Corbyn and McDonnell. I think that Labour has a death wish.

Yes it says he was trying to make a point in a hopelessly obscure way, was so conceited he thought he'd look clever and that if he had an ounce of common sense he'd have thought twice.

He now looks a right fool, yet again and that reflects on the whole party.

Time for Labour to get rid. There was so much to criticise in Osborne's announcement yesterday (see separate thread) and McDonnell missed his chance. Even Ed Balls would have done better

The sad part is that (imo) it was amusing but the order of the day was substance over style and he totally misjudged the situation.

There was nothing "hopelessly obscure" about it, even my wife got the point straight away.

Well you and McD need to realise that few people watch it live and most will stick with the 6 O'Clock news extract

And that image will stick.

It has nothing to do with watching it live. The Tories are selling assets to the Chinese very obviously without researching what has happened when other countries have. Either that or they personally are making some money out of it and that is all they care about.
I suggest you read the reference I posted earlier.

It was aimed at the Tory front bench, and I suspect they are fully aware of why.
Unless someone is personally making money out of selling assets to the Chinese, there is no other reason to do so.
Selling British assets to the Chinese is madness.

What else are the Chinese supposed to do with all those pound notes we give them for the billions of exports ?

Why do you think the Germans have to buy up UK utility companies?

I don't care what the Chinese do with the money, I do care about a British government selling the Chinese British assets, or letting them be involved in building nuclear power stations in Britain or owning British air traffic control.

Unless and industry is considered to be of strategic value to the nation I see little difference between British, German, Russian, US or Chinese ownership. I prefer such international investments as then these counties and people will have some shared ownership and hopefully take due responsibility to protect their assets. I find all this British companies for British owners or the UK State so 20th C. Globalisation means more inter-trade and more cooperation and maybe even more inter racial copulation.

This is why we have so many problems, and yet all you can see is pound signs.

We are in effect allowing major decisions affecting our people, nation and economy to be taken in foreign boardrooms where there is often no concern for the host nations interests.

And yet in other posts you drearily bang on about the UK losing political self determination but consider economic self determination a saleable item!

Amazing!

what was this supposed to be ?

you need to bear in mind i have been living under a rock for the past few weeks. (best place to be when russian aircraft civil and military alike are falling out of the skies)

as i understand things this started out as some sort of a dig at osborne's financial aptitude but now is supposed to have been some sort of a joke

if he'd thrown chaiman DENG's memoirs I might have understood.
