You must be joking Mary, I am the most incompetent techie on the planet, MS pestered me for the last 4 months to upgrade for free, the window appeared everytime I turned the laptop on and it promised that nothing would change in the way I use it, and MS was true to that, the upgrade took about 75 mins and I am using it just as I used V8.

Perhaps Mary had version 7 prior to her new laptop..It is a considerable leap then to version 10..

Windows 8.1 had the apps running horizontally across the screen. Windows 10 has them vertically. But I find Microsoft edge very efficient. As for Cortana, it's take it or leave it, and I mostly leave it. Apart from that I can't see what all the fuss was about.

I ignored Cortana for a week and it disappeared into the rh side bar.

I got a technician to upgrade my Tablet to Windows 10.

It was FAR easier to use afterwards.

It was only after a few weeks that I realised they had actually substituted it for an Etch-O-Sketch machine !

I hated 8 and ''re-downgraded'' to 7 after about four months of persevering on the PC

I've ignored all mention of 10

"Microsoft has faced criticism for changing the pop-up box encouraging Windows users to upgrade to Windows 10.

Clicking the red cross on the right hand corner of the pop-up box now activates the upgrade instead of closing the box".

Mrs did this.
And lost all sound on videos, regardless of which she used - You Tube etc.
I tried the remedies I found online (it's a common fault with Win 7 upgrades), and decided to go back to 7 - which MS do offer to any that don't like the upgrade.

Did you ALSO know that - as a standard install - Windows 10 relays keystrokes (and audio, if you are Skyping etc, or using voice activated commands... including 'writing' letters) back to Microsoft HQ ? Along with data that MIGHT be able to identify you (when used with other data), such as IP address, location etc.

This information is then shared with Microsofts "Partners".

Scary stuff.

Don't trust the reverse back to Win 7, it left my Notebook with no virus checking and then it will not download Microsoft Security essentials again

Also be aware that they are disabling Windows Live Mail for Hotmail/Outlook Mail next month in an attempt to force more to move to Win 10

If you can't get MSE to work (I have never had much joy with, or faith in, it) use one of the myriad free services out there.

I have used Avast (antivirus) and Comodo (firewall) for years and never once had any problems.

Having seen Win10 on my parents' PC when the time comes to turn of Win7 I'll be trying some version of Linux.

My advice

1) download and install clonezilla

2) buy some blank dvds

3) spend an afternoon making a clonezilla backup

4) press the button from hell

enjoy, or not, secure in the knowledge you can **ALWAYS* revert.

I did.

There is a win 7 partition on this machine, alongside two linux ones and a win 10 one all multi bootable. I have tamed windows 10 but it took a bit of doing.

Seriously, I took the plunge because we needed to know how bad it was for the company I work for. So I took the laptop (win 7) that I bought that opens out absolutely flat, which I used while I had to look at the ground for a fortnight after the vitrectomy, and i installed win 10 on it. Edge is a no-no, cortana had to go, and as for that bloody share your wifi to distribute windows patchesm fuck that. There are a number of windows 10 annoyances websites you need to read the details on

But honestly, after a while, and after a bit of reading those websites, its not an issue for me PROFESSIONALLY

Sure, Vis Studio 10 and SQL Server 2008R2 are not well supported but that's why you have Oracle Virtualbox and Win 7 and although they whinge, they **DO** work. So does Office 2007 & Office 2010

Yes my tight fisted boss will face a dilemma soon, but I'll be retired then, not my problem. I've advised his (IT Director) son what my hourly rate to pull em out of retirement will be, and if they do not collectively dig deep and futureproof themselves for another 5 years before I leave for the beach and a beer, more fool them.

Having sorted that out I upgraded moiras and jennifers laptops.

I have one last laptop to fix up. It's an old acer and we will see.

There is one further laptop, which is, i believe, still owned by my old company.

I doubt it will run windows 10

If anyone has specific issues put them here ! (after all it's not my bandwidth ;-)

I heartily recommend it for what it is handed out to do. which is to write compressed image files of a complete hard drive onto something you can burn to DVD, verify, stick in a dark cupboard or fire safe and restore EXACTLY as they were ...

It can do other things, like move partitions around,or restore one partition in place of another, or write partitions and restore them to bigger or smalle rdisks, but this is VERY HARD GOING

I keep these images of what I used to have for one reason. Someone. somewhere, might get into the sort of shite in five years time that means they might pay a sheik's ransom for someone who can sort them out. It would not be the first time and last time it paid for a trip to EuroDisney stayin gin th eNewport Bay Club for a very long weekend for eight. Given that DVD's are five a pound in poundland, I look on it as placing a bet on leicester doing it again in ten years time...

(P.S. I gave up on installing firewalls on my pc and laptop the day I started using an ADSL router. The place to have the firewal is ... the router.
with the router decently secured and all unspecified inbound ports going to a /dev/null unresponsive, stealthed black hole that says thank you, records you and drops you, Nothing is climbing into my PC's unless an outbound connection invites it and no firewall is going to deal with that is it !)
