I just nipped out to my workshop for a fag and listened to the news for today, well, I found this report to be of concern....the interim Governor of Rio has publicly stated that Rio has run out of funds and is skint and now cannot guarantee public services and the running of the states infrastructure during the Olympic games.

I have to ask, did the IOC carry out due diligence before awarding the games to Rio? will the Brazilian government step in and underwrite the problem or will the IOC have to dig deep to make this a success, also, most Russian athletes have been banned for proving positive regarding the taking of banned substances, but some can take part if they become "neutral".

This is becoming a farce, I wonder how the world cup will turn out in Russia and Qatar.

Added to that some athletes aren't going due to the zika virus.

Probably too late to back out now but this is, as you say, becoming a farce.

Yes agreed.

The whole idea of the Olympic Games has become a farce. I'm not sure it was ever anything else. Lots of countries taking part seem to think it is about the willing the status and power, the one-upmanship that proves you are the best in the world and how you get there does not matter, nothing to do with sportsmanship.

The games have got to such a level that fractions of seconds and millimetres can make the difference to winning or coming third what is it really proving - who is the best !jk! So much depends on the money and support provided by a country to it's athletes, add in drugs and the results are meaningless - what a waste of time, money and energy - just one big show - not sport. Th UK have done really well in recent years in cycling but only after money was pumped into that sport, so it's the money that counts.

Nah, London 2012 was magnificent

But Rio 2016 may be a disaster, literally and one where the warning signs were long visible

Why not klll two birds with one stone. Give the Olympic games to Greece on a permanent basis. After all, that's where the whole shebang started. Let all the competing nations make an annual financial donation to the Greeks to keep the facilities and the infrastructure in good order between games, and let the Greek economy have the benefit of staging said games every four years.

This would have the added advantage of preventing the IOC members from being on the take when they run the bidding process for venues, and for the necessity of bidding nations to sweeten their bids when grubbing for votes. You know it makes sense.

I think that that is an excellent suggestion and could well give the Greeks Kudos and self respect back let alone creating permanent jobs....10/10.

The IOC as well as FIFA are more concerned about awarding events based on PC ideology, cultural relativism and "virtue signalling", rather than on which nation can best deliver the requirements of the event.

Alberich's idea has significant merit.

Well they sad that ours was going to be a disaster...right up to the day it opened.
Perhaps we just secretly don't want Rio's to be as good.....because ours would look better.
I'm sure it will be ok. They had the World cup... and that was ok.
Just brighten it up with Carnival.

Apparently a load of mosquito's were going to boycott the games because they were worried about all the dangerous chemicals they might ingest if they bit any athletes.

But as the Russians have been banned from attending the mosquito's have called off the boycott.

Between Zika, leopard attacks, poor quality construction, and corruption, Rio is heading for disaster.
