Well, whilst on the way to pick up my younger sis and carry on to a funeral I casually listened to "You and yours" on R4.

Suffice to say I was astounded by the report, I now have to ask if the numbers of new cars in this country sold from the forecourt are actually true as claimed.

It begins at about/ish 15 seconds in and is well worth listening to.

For anyone else that detests having to stop what everyone else in the room is watching in order to catch old news on a video link then this was the story from 2 days ago

Up to a fifth of new cars in the UK are estimated to be "pre-registered" to dealers - potentially skewing sales figures and leaving drivers confused.

These cars are surplus stock sold cheaply to dealers who keep them before selling on to customers at discounts.

Some dealers say pre-registering is "like a drug" used to hit their sales targets, a BBC investigation has found.

This has been a common practice for years

Oh, I do beg your pardon for forcing you to listen to the Link, when you ask me for a link in future do not be surprised at the response you will get. !wav!

PS, the link I posted was taken from BBC RADIO 4.

ooh touchy. Maybe the BBC search engine doesn't work on your PC?

Works fine here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/search?q=cars&filter=news&suggid=

Don't you think it would be helpful if thread opening posts contained links to articles that were quotable and easily read in most situations? You're not the only one that thinks otherwise but it's hardly courteous to other posters.

It doesn't matter..if you buy a ''new car'' drive it out of the showroom..offer it up for sale..I would say..20% off..if you are lucky..

I do not keep archives of the BBC going back to 2014, I merely gave a link and a tantalising precis of what I heard on the radio.

My links are normally very precise with exact timings and a description before hand, but unlike your goodself, I am not perfect, in future you can always ignore my posts that contain a link.....I do not particularly care anymore.

Even mods post bare links without a description beforehand.

It has indeed been common practice for years, we never ever purchased any brand new commercial vehicles, despite there being some smallish tax breaks it never made sense after all most vehicles of this category will lose half their value in the first three years, ex demonstrators, delivery mileage and former company vehicle (registered to the dealer!) are all used to knock down the retail price.

Indeed so

It works like this:-

A couple of times a year, Mike down the road gets a call from the manufacturer's whose cars he sells.

He will be granted large discounts on the trade price of every brand new vehicle he orders for the next couple of months IF he can shift 'x' vehicles by the end of the month so the manufacturer can increase the sales figures they provide to the ONS

So Mike buys a car or two from the manufacturer at a whopping discount off the roof price.

He registers it in the company's name, he might even actually use it as a demonstrator or courtesy car for a week or two. In the meanwhile he emails (he used to fax, that will show you how long this has been going on) people like me who ran our own businesses, and did pretty high mileages on run of the mill mid range cars. basically it's a case of "hey that car I sold you the other year must be coming up to its MOT / getting close to 100k on the clock / whatever and if you're looking I've got these two or three (whatever they might be) which I have to sell ex-demo by the end of the month with about 'z' on the clock and I can let them go for 'x'" .... where 'x' is a bloody sight less than roof price in the brochure...

I'm happy because I have a car at two thirds what it might have cost me if it was "new" and the odometer when I got it said way less than 1000 miles. Hell, my current Suzuki Splash came to me with FOUR miles on the clock, it was delivered to the forecourt at 9am, taken for a test drive as the demo car at 10 and sold to me at 11.

Mike is happy because in return for laying out a wad he's made a very quick sale and has the guarantee of the service business and he's secured massive discounts from the manufacturer on his next 'x' orders which he's NOT fool enough to try and keep but he does plough those savings into the rooftop prices so he undercuts other dealers selling other makes ...

Mitsubushi Honda and Suzuki are happy because they can put in figures to the ONS that make it seem there's a boom in the business

So who loses exactly ?

As far as I can see, the only loser is HMRC who don't collect as much VAT and Corporation Tax if the cars were sold full price, but then again they'd collect far less if they were sold full price as not so many would be sold ...

What was the problem again ? No-one is conning me ??
