Main problem with this site, it's not easily found on search engines, it needs better meta and search notifiers.

When I search it up, I normally get other forums or similar named things.

There was an experiment to try and improve that. It involved adding code into our baseline pages. I'll ask the mod that led it how it went but clearly from your viewpoint it was less than successful

IMHO though forums like this recruit mainly through word of mouth

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
I must say, one wonders (well, I do anyway) why this forum does not attract new members considering how laid back it is, is there anyway of advertising it?

I honestly think that general type forums are dying out. IMO we are fortunate in that we have very few nutcases passing through.
Yeah, a lot of people are attracted to Social media, or places like Youtube, always getting into debates there as-well!

Though as I said, it doesn't always pop up on search engines, which isn't helping!

Yep

Anyone object if I split out this serious line of discussion into a main forum thread of its own

I just went through the HTML, the Meta tags are woeful, tell them to improve it, there's plenty of tricks to get the attention of Google's search algorithms.

Is it? My search engine came up with it on the first page item 8, when I typed uk debate I would say that is good. I then tried just "debating" no sign of the site.

Hiya everybody.

As Mot has pointed out, we rank very well for the search term "uk debate".

In fact, for the term "uk debate forum" we are at No #2, pushing the Daily Mail forum into 3rd place !!! :P
There is a caveat here; the exact search results you get depend on what country you are in, and also whether or not you are logged in to a google account at the point when you make the search ! (if you ARE, then the search results will be 'biased' towards your previous search history, and what google THINKS you might be interested in).

the Zetaboards forum doesn't support URL re-writing, which somewhat restricts our ability to feature in wider, topic-specific searches. We are also investigating the option to have our own domain, which MAY improve our general rankings, as google takes private domains slightly more seriously than generic 'shared' domains like Zetaboards. However, it will take some careful research, as just creating a new domain with a 301 redirect to the underlying Zeta servers may run the risk of us being penalised for "duplicate content". (either that, or we would have to lock out the existing URL, and make it "new domain only", which would play havoc with existing members having to update their bookmarks etc). Notwithstanding, we ARE looking into this.

In regards the MetaTags... we will look into this as well. However, be advised that google stopped using metatags in its ranking algorithm back in 2009. In addition, because it is an active database site, and we don't have access to the underlying code to implement dynamic metatag re-writing, then we can only improve the tags for the home page. We can't produce topic-dependant metatags.

I'll update this thread as we develop new information.

How about renaming the forum UK Debate Sideboob? We could well get even more tabloid readers on here?
