Anyone know how you can search for a recent death if you know their name, the area where they lived and the approximate date of likely death?

I've tried https://www.iannounce.co.uk/ but no result but then it doesn't even list deaths I do know of because nowadays people often don't place death or funeral notices in papers.

The official government site GRO only lists deaths til 1957 and seems most cemeteries don't put lists of funerals online. Google gives no clear result either, neither does the official Gazette but them some people (are unwise enough to) not list estates there and anyway such can be months later.

Somehow I figure I've missed the funeral

You will discover your answer on Facebook ...... first find someone either related or from the area that has a FB account - shouldn't be too difficult. Just put the name in and search.

I was going to say, Facebook, not everyone is on it and if the name is common this route may not work. But would add that I guess Steve would have already tired that. I believe the local NHS area nurses are advised when someone dies, but public bodies are not very good for giving information out. Maybe when someone falls off the radar they could be ill and not dead.

Have you tried the area council department dealing with cemeteries and bookings ? They were very helpful one time when turning up on the wrong day (fortunately too early) day for a funeral service that didn't seem to be happening

Is it in England?

I know that all Irish deaths are listed on a particular website

Were they religious ?

The catholic and anglican churches HAVE to keep registers, and frankly, your local vicar may well know where you could direct enquiries.

Also the probate office will know their executor and through them the funeral director.

You may need to prove some connection ...

Well Steve, a couple of years ago the boy's blood father lived and worked in Manchester and used to keep in regular contact, then it all went quiet for 6 months at which point I contacted Greater Manchester police to see if they could throw any light on the matter but despite their best efforts and many returned calls they came up with Zilch.

So I tried all the local hospitals and finally got a result, but it was alas very sad, he had died two months earlier.

They gave me the funeral parlours number and we contacted them and arranged to pick his ashes up..

I would have thought that the police would have contacted the hospitals.....but there you go, perhaps you may have some luck by doing the same. :rubchin:

You might also try the following if you are talking of years ago.

If it's that important employ the services of a specialist company, prices start at around forty quid.
