I don't like Christmas...I have everything I need..I don't like crappy presents either..

However..apparently people go into debt...the worse way to get into debt at Christmas is to order from ''catalogues'' you pay for 30 months...and the next year they order again...and get deeper in debt...Targets the poor..where a £300 washing machine will cost you £900 in ''Brighthouse'' A loan from the provident will cost you 220% APR..They sell Mobile phones..big screen tellys..everything someone on the dole could desire...It's only £20 a week for 5 years!!

Christmas does have its good points but the overall effect is very sus.

As for Brighthouse what a bunch of bastards. If I hear that a meteorite has crashed through their board room killing half its members, my biggest regret would be that it wasn't a bigger one

I agree..it's shameful...My friend bought a fridge from them and apparently you have to give 6 people's numbers who would vouch for your honesty...the fridge must have had a retail value of £150..she paid £600..and yes they did phone me up to see if she was trustworthy...

I can't believe their operation is legal. Seems to be both anti competitive and misuse of savers monies

I wonder who the names are behind them. Will look later

Turns out they are 100% owned by Vision Capital LLP [1] http://www.visioncapital.com/People/ and as far as I can work out their main owner (and CEO) is one Julian Paul Vivian Mash. His wife Camilla is also a director of aligned companies with very similar names

https://www.crunchbase.com/person/julian-mash#/entity

He has more than one home in the UK (won't disclose where but not that hard to find) and the company's official location is 55 James St London SW1A 1LA Telephone (0) 20 7389 6410

Here's a mugshot of sorts

[1] there have been several instantiations of this name over the years which looks dodgy

Forgive me for being thick, but what does instantiation mean within the context of this company?

Thank you, it would seem that chicanery is afoot here, why has the government not looked into this obvious dubious company?

One can only guess.

Whatever else you think of all these bargain shops.....BM bargains, Poundstretcher, Poundland they are meeting a need.

I had a cruise round before Christmas and thought that if I was less well off (like I was when my kids were small).....
I could get everything I need for Christmas in these shops.....They must like a God send for families who only want to put parcels under the tree.

Bright house is different because its a rip off for vulnerable people.
The shoppers themselves are to blame as well. If you don't have the money you can't have it.
British Heart Foundation.... small ads, sales, appliances direct...... in fact loads of alternatives to paying stupid APR.

That a dodgy venture capital form seems to be the current "owner" is interesting, but according to the Financial Times (I got the link below to work for me, so it might be a "taster", BrightHouse's CEO as of April 2015 was one Leo McKee ... although the same page did say a company called Vision Capital were then looking at an IPO for them

https://www.ft.com/content/2d4dd2cc-e376-11e4-9a82-00144feab7de

EDIT: Shit sorry Mckee a forner dorector of Woolworths (!!) retired in Sept last year handing the reins to one Hamish Paton who had been on their payroll for a decade

Further edit. Google seems to have a way to show me several articles from retail week on Brighthouse, but on the standard drug dealer's terms of one free sample and then you pay. But it does seem the firm complained in Oct 2016 that "more rigorous affordability checks are affecting its business model"

The Financial Conduct Authority have conducted an investigation into Bright House, and in Feb 2015 MP's criticised them

So I would say they have, insofar as they can ...
