I got a pop up yesterday about being infected with the Zeus virus. It was obviously a scam, telling me that microsoft were blocking my computer until I phoned them for instructions on how to get rid of it. Which of course I didn't do. It also told me not to close down the computer until it was fixed. Which of course I did do. When I restarted, the message was still there and I was unable to delete it or navigate away from it. Eventually after a couple of restarts, I managed to delete it. I also cleared my browser, I'm on chrome on a chromebook. Everything seems fine since.

I've had a look around the net on the topic and there are several sites telling me how to get rid of it properly. Nothing seems to follow through though. Everything seems to relate to windows, which of course I haven't got.

Any advice on anything else I should do?

what OS have you got then ??

EDIT: yes I saw chrome on a chromebook. As I do not own one of those, can you tell me exactly what OS / release / last update date ...

EDIT AGAIN: Have you read THIS https://chromebook.guide/chromebook-virus-removal/

What this seems to say is is isn't possible for your chromebook to be hit by a virus in the way a windows PC can be, but your browser can be reconfigured by malware (dodgy browser extensions, add ons etc to make it seem you have been

EDIT AGAIN https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/3438631?hl=en&source=genius-helpouts

As I said, I don't have one of these, the nearest I have is a carphone warehouse ubuntu netbook which is years old but arguably set the trend ! From reading up on the chromebook's official take on this ...

Reboot, and see if your verified boot complains

If it does not complain, try requesting a full update of anything and everything.

Dump any unsafe browser extensions. In fact, dump any and all and try again

If that fails, Kiss goodbye to your favorites, passwords and the like and try whatever it takes to reload your browser from scratch. as I said I don't own one of these things I'm not sure how to do that, on my webbook it was literally a case of remove the browser, and reinstall it from the (ubuntu) official download source ...

Hope some of that helps

Yes, I thought the system was pretty safe as opposed to windows.

I've been into the extensions and cant find anything dubious at all. I have reset the browser, which means I have to reset passwords for every site I have in favourites. It didn't delete the actual sites themselves though, they were still there in bookmarks. Nothing showing in history or downloads.

It seems fine at the moment, and I'm pretty sure there is no actual virus and it's just a scam to get money for nothing. There is always the option of doing a powerwash to put back to factory settings if need be.
