My mother-in-law died this Chrustmas morning, down in Florida. This was not unexpected but we haven' t told our children, yet lest we ruin their Christmas. You can't undo something like that and the news will keep for a day or two.

Condolences.

And memories of 2005, the year I found out that undertakers do in fact work over Christmas, but mostly for those who have no reason to celebrate it.

I got the call to get my arse down to the ward down the corridor from my former research lab in the hospital for my father about 5:30am and by then it was in fact already too late to get there "in time". That was on the 23rd of December, the undertaker was called and we agreed to leave things until the new year for all sorts of reasons.

Largely through her own stupidity, my mother now well into her eighties has managed to alienate herself from almost all branches of the extended family that are the sons and daughters of her mother's seven sisters and brother. That takes some doing, but she managed it, including me for almost a decade. I popped in on the 24th to see her and she is clearly in failing mental "health" and I do not think she will see her latest great granddaughter now aged six make it to secondary school to be honest, and if she does, I doubt she would recall her name.

I understand why you haven't told the kids, but how old are they ? When dad went, Sarah was twenty and Jennifer was 16. Jennifer didn't care because by then mum had embittered her to the point she vowed never to see her again long since, and she hasn't, she wouldn't even go to dad's funeral. Two days after he died, on Christmas day, Sarah, who was far closer to him, sank an entire bottle of JD, started on another, and did a "conan the barbarian" face first into the turkey and yorkshire,

As to all the celebrity exits, well, December's a boom month for the undertaking profession, so is January, always was, always will be. I have mentioned before the medical student they assigned to dad's case. Every first year medic in the welsh medical schools gets the delightful job of shadowing the case of a terminally ill patient sometime in their first year. Most get off lucky and complete their assignment in the early stages. Dad had about four or five such individuals ... but the last one, poor bugger, got the short straw. Started clinical year that september, assigned to dad's case in November, watched the fatal dose of morphine administered on dec 22nd.

The medical school do this to have their students grasp very, very quickly the fact that life is a terminal illness with a 100% (well, three individuals claim to have beaten it) death rate. Sounds cruel but the bottom line is if they can't handle that as an integral part of their chosen profession, let's find out sooner rather than later, shall we.

Condolences to you all, it kind of mutes your Christmas and New Year, especially if you were fond of her.

This time of the year has me thinking back to Christmas Eve, 1999. My father died on the 19th Dec, and his Requiem Mass and burial were on Christmas Eve. He 'knew' he was 'going', he had absolutely all preparations made, it was just a case of making phone calls to the numbers he had listed. He died very quietly in his sleep - so quietly that he never disturbed my mum sleeping beside him.

My father also died on the 23rd of December but one year earlier ... and I arrived ten minutes too late. Anyway , our ancient ancestors associated Midwinter with the end of life and it appears that they worshipped it in some way.

As a child we weren't really allowed to acknowledge death..it was all very hush..hush..amongst the adults..and we weren't allowed to go to the funeral either..

However my Aunty Maggie died...and we did wakes...the wake was held in the parlour...there were flowers everywhere...When I asked who they were all for..I was told they were for my Aunt Margaret..so I said ''where is she?'' ''Under the flowers''' was the reply????

All very puzzling?

However when I lived in the South of France..It was an open coffin and you were expected to kiss the deceased..even the children..I have seen many a screaming child forced to kiss a dead person...

I like a good wake or celebration.

A persons life is many years of memories...... it always seems unfair to them just to remember the end.

We don't really do open coffins, although some parts of the country traditionally do.
Same reason really...Just want to remember them how they were.

On the OP.... It seems there has been a lot of celebrity deaths this year. People who have been an important backdrop to my life.
The magnificent talents of Bowie and Prince ...Alan Rickman and Victoria Wood who were so admired.... Status Quo who were part of the establishment and now George Michael...Pop Icon and man of his time.
Rest in peace all the beautiful people we have lost this year.

Condolences to CC and family.

One of the very few TV series that actually encouraged me to read the books. Liz was exactly as I had imagined her.

Rick Parfitt was a major influence on me musically.

George Michael not so much.

Jean Alexander... just classic.

Not another one, even if it is kind of understandable

Well, I suppose she has the consolation that she didn't outlive her daughter by much.
