Alright politically I didn't have much time for him. However he has been notable for his absence lately. I know that he has had some health issues but I hope that he is okay.

Sorry to say Lewis that I fear the worst but have been unable to confirm this using passive searches and I will not actively contact his family to find out

But RJD hasn't responded to my emails and he was always very quick to do so - we got on far better in private than our combative posts might indicate

If my suspicions are true it will be a very sad loss

Oh that is sad. Hope that you are wrong. It comes to us all, some time or another!

Sadly I now know what we all had feared.

RJD died in early November last year, he had been very ill for several years having been diagnosed in 2010. A fighter to the end, he'd outlived the predictions and amazingly was posting here the same week he died.

Roger was in his early 70s and had been a director for several Engineering companies in a long career.

RIP

It is always a bit sad when someone you sort of know dies, to say we never really hit it off is a bit of an understatement! Our best clashes were over the merits of DIY gas fitting and the endless posts about the evils of socialism!

I became aware or "RJD" through a person I'd had contact with through work, a chap called Bob Ambridge who some might know better as Twitter Troll Old Holborn, Bob was always amusing in real life and we had something in common, six kids each! Being the modest chap Bob is he directed me to various internet forums where he seemed to hold court, this is when I first "met" RJD, he was a member of the GOM forum and stood out from all the usual stuffed shirts on there as you could tell he was not originally from shall we say the managerial classes, his insults often betrayed his background and the spelling police often corrected him.

I never bothered with internet forums and online debating back then considering it rather pointless and a waste of productive time, but then again it is fun isn't it when you've got some spare time on your hands and virtually bugger all to really worry about anymore.

I could try and get the last word in here with Roger, it was always a struggle on the forum, but that would crass and insensitive and in real life I make an concerted effort to be neither, and yes it is a struggle at times! So here's to RJD, if there is something after three score years and ten I'll seek you out at some point in eternity and I'll be on my best behaviour when we meet!

. . this is when I first "met" RJD, he was a member of the GOM forum and stood out from all the usual stuffed shirts on there . .
RJD posted as oldrwb on the GOM forum.

Here are most of his posts there: RJD, the early forum posting years

Hopefully he wouldn't mind but here have a laugh at one of his early non PC ones:
RJD/oldrwb early 2005 when someone mentioned a second home in Spain

Place is full of stinking lagerlout Brits. Why go to Spain or France for that matter? Ignorant lot. Me I prefer Italia as it has the best food, best looking girls and lots and lots of places worthy of my attention. Not been to France in at least 10 years, probably will never ever go there again, avoid their products in the shops, would not be seen dead driving one of their crappy cars. How the hell do we tolerate them, they even beat us at football, God it makes me angry and sick to the pit of my stomache. No I do not have a second home, except for a timeshare in a swanky many star hotel on a very English island off Africa, no not the one full of krauts and frogs and low life European scum. As for the EU e should revert to calling it "on the Continent"!

That's the sort of thing I used to like, so much to criticise! ;D

We could have an RJD theme day in November with threads such as, "Will Corbyn Open Gulags and Execute Capitalists?" You'll be told you don't know what you are talking about despite 12 links utterly disproving the claim, and I'll be reminded I'm uneducated and a mere tradesman so unqualified to comment!

It's been quite a while since I last posted. Perusing the latest discussions I was sad to find this topic and felt it necessary to say farewell to a past debating giant of this forum. While it's fair to say RJD and myself had little time for each other's views and treated each other with little respect during our often heated head to heads, I'm sorry to hear of his passing.

Hopefully he's in a better place, is having a few stiff drinks and is reminiscing with old friends. RIP.
