Now here's a thing, I don't suppose it matters much to most people, but in my line of work as a maintenance engineer I must have replaced hundreds of Vee belts, now, I have never given one single thought as to the classification of a Vee belt or ribbed or toothed belts, I have always looked at the printing on the belt and ordered the same for stock replacement

But I got to thinking just how belts ARE classified and was quite surprised to learn that the whole world virtually goes by a German Classification system.

Have a read if you are interested enough to do so.

Hmm... well... the first website is a private blog by somebody who appears to be bilingual in German and English. Hence all of the category names of the belts are given in both English and German. However, the article DOES refer to DIN and ISO classifications.

Is it possible that the German connection is down to the preferences of the author, rather than indicating a trend in industry ?

But if you read into the report, the letters such as ....SPZ, SPX, SPA etc all seem to derive from the Germanic language....I am not claiming that this is the definitive derivation of Vee belt classification, but even if it is I am not bothered as long as it is universally accepted and used.....it makes life so much easier.

And on a lighter note, that is what the EU was supposed to do.....yeah right. doh:

Is this a good time to point out that Star Wars would likely never have been a successful franchise if the baddies had been called Metric Stormtroopers?

Now as much as I have given Germany shit (read Merkel and co) for being so hegemonistic over Europe it cannot be denied that they are probably the best Engineers in the western hemisphere.

I would hate to think that I am bombarding this site with engineering overtones, but even at the bottom of the range where amateurs operate you would have a job on your hands to beat them.

This chap called Stefan is something else.

Rich - emergency fan belts often seem to go by 'denier' rating.

But you are speaking of the good old days when women wore suspenders and stockings (whooooar) .....nowadays it is the blinking tights that make seduction so difficult in a car. ;-)
