Is there a benchmark or is it a personal thing?

What do you consider makes someone or you rich.

:rubchin:

Something like if your net wealth + 20 times gross income > 100 times average wage?

IE have net assets of ~£3M or salary of £150k or some mix of same.

On that definition, I'm not rich, well short in fact so excluding a lottery win then at this age I ain't ever going to be rich. I can cope with that.

So it is 'rich' in financial terms, only.
I don't measure things in financial terms alone, never have, so any answer I give will be alien to how most people regard being rich.

Let's start with 'lack of need'.

Why not start with the dictionary? https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/rich

Having a great deal of money or assets; wealthy

I was seeking to give objectivity to 'great deal'

A 'great deal' is having more than anyone could possibly need under any predictable and conceivable circumstances.

I'm quite sure that the many buyers of multi million pound Central London houses and flats would be delighted to know
that you don't consider them ''rich''

Precisely Ewill, for you see, every morning that I wake up I consider myself to be a multimillionaire.

The most expensive headstone in the cemetery is no good to me or mine. ;-)

Only if they construed 'need' with 'want' as you apparently do.

I simply replied to your post A 'great deal' is having more than anyone could possibly need under any predictable and conceivable circumstances

Thus Central London dwellers in Expensive properties are not rich by your logic

Your idol old Jezza isn't ''rich'' according to him

I don’t consider myself highbrow or wealthy, but I still enjoy some aspects of classical music. I want everybody to have that attitude and that same experience.”
The basic annual salary for an MP from April 2016 is £74,962. The leader of the opposition is also entitled to an additional salary of £62,440 on top of this, taking Corbyn’s total earnings to around £138,000 a year.
The average UK salary in 2015 was less than a fifth of that, coming in at £27,271 according to the Office of National Statistics.

Jeremy Corbyn has made more than £3million from the state in the past 30 years, according to official records.

The Labour leader has made more than £1.5million in salary as an MP and will benefit from a generous £1.6million pension when he retires.

A senior backbench Labour MP said the scale of his earnings was "remarkable" in the wake of Mr Corbyn's criticism of David Cameron over his own tax affairs.

True. You are poor if you can't afford what you need. You are adequate if you can afford what you need. You are rich if you can afford all you need and also what you want.

Interesting views.

What about "if you have more money than you need and need nothing you can't afford"

Define 'need'

Who actually 'needs' more than a basic staple diet and a roof over their head. Most would say only having that equalled being very poor

Basic need is more than the necessity for shelter and food!
It's having a purpose, responsibilities, occupation, a reason to exist, and the satisfaction of fulfilling those requirements. It is taking an active and productive role in society - as opposed to becoming vegetative state.

Yes
All anyone actually needs is food, water and somewhere to sleep safely
With a roof
Anything else is arguably wants

One can only live in one house at a time, drive one car at a time, if you have the ones around you that you love and they love you, then for me that is happiness I have all that I need, wealth cannot buy you health or happiness there are no pockets in a shroud rich or poor none of us live forever

Yes, Paul reflects on richness/wealth, with wisdom - I also believe the Bible says one or three things about wealth.

;D

And I still prefer imperial measurements even though my lathe is set up for metric so I can, if need be use both, it is just a simple matter of conversion.
