I have loved the sound of this mans voice and his demeanour ever since I was a teenager.

Sod the modern day singers...for me they cannot hold a candle to him.

And as you will see and hear, a beautiful jazz pianist.

Oh yes he was very good, so was his daughter

For a perfect voice that she used brilliantly, I'd say Joan Baez is the greatest I've heard

(but not my favourite singer by a long way)

'The Greatest' as an epithet for a singer or anyone else, is always down to personal subjective taste/perception/agenda. {As a for instance of 'agenda', Herod 'The Great' was initially called 'The Great' by his Roman masters, in order to wind-up the Jews, who hated and feared the sociopathic and psychopathic, paranoid nut job] - and yeh yeh, he is also supposedly one of my ancient great-grandfathers, so thankyou DNA - albeit thankfully very diluted.

For crooners, Sinatra was head and shoulders above the rest.
For opera, Domingo in his prime had a majesty that few can equal. For a modern tenor, Villazon takes some beating.

And for the girls, then Ella Fitzgerald, and the divine Sarah Vaughan are high on my list; and for lighter pop music, then Dusty Springfield comes to mind.
In the world of opera, then Jessye Norman, and Rennee Fleming take some beating. But top of my desert island disc choices would be Lucia Popp singing Richard Strauss'e "four last songs".

Totally subjective choices, of course.

IMHO, Nat King Cole is also a strong contender, as is/was a couple of real golden oldies, Richard Tauber and 'Count' John McCormack {pity about the quality of recordings back in the 78rmp days.]

Pleasing to the ear and being able to understand every word?

Would you sit and listen to radio head?....for instance.

And as usual, you create a "problem" where there was not one before, go and have a nice sleep in a darkened room , it will do you good. ;-)

Yes mate, a good list that I would certainly give time to.

But how about this for a bit of info...Kevin Fong...wtf is he? says you and I agree, I had not heard of him until this morning and your comment regarding Desert Island Discs reminded me.

He is a Dr of mixed parentage, but I have to say it was a pleasure to listen to him and his choices.

But I particularly liked the statement he iterated that came from his father.

"A good education is the best weapon against ignorance and prejudice"

I whole heartedly agree with that sentiment.

Well, Papa, ones likes and dislikes are subjective and I was only giving my opinion and not trying to create a problem.

But here's a thing....take two very simple and boring words, for instance,...."I have", now those two words in and of themselves mean nothing much to anybody.

But take those two simple words and put them at the beginning of a song and just see how the singer makes those two words interesting.

The former is a very long list, in the latter case there are singers who don't sing in English but who have fantastic voices.
It would be impossible for me to single out one.

FFS, I did not mean to cause all this fuss, why cannot people just say who they like the most instead of creating a "problem" where there was none.

I despair at some posters on this board, my wife thinks that I am grumpy and miserable...she should compare me to one or two of you lot...you must lead a very lonely life.

This post is not aimed at you Delf.

Because it is not as simple as you seem to think it is. (For a start to me, ALL female opera singers sound like they are being tortured by a combination of heated irons and high voltage electricity. The noise they make causes me actual pain.)

Don't you fxxxxxg get it Papa, the choice is entirely subjective, if there is no one you like to listen to, then fxxxxxg say so.

But you see, I know that that would not be the truth.

have a listen if you dare.

Well, I must admit that opera sounds like a load of rubbish to me.

Though I must admit that I like Nessun Dorme' (no one sleeps)

I can agree that SOME opera can be heavy going. I wouldn't suggest starting you off on the Ring cycle, but some of the most beautiful and melodic music is contained in opera. I could name you a dozen or so arias that even you, undoubted Philistine that you are, would have to admit made for pleasant listening.

Or perhaps not.

Just because I do not like female opera singers does not make me a Philistine, you are an elitist for making that comment.

David Draiman has an amazing voice, a huge range and very technically accomplished.

In fact I now like his version of better than the original, and strangely enough so does my mother, and a woman I work with who is 67 years old.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk7RVw3I8eg

Is he the best of all time, don't know; but for singers active today he's bloody hard to beat.

All The Best

The key line in this song, the defining line is "how I wish I was in love".
Everything else is sourced by this sentiment ......... a man who has everything he could want but is miserable because there is no love in his life.

We had a great singer here in Canada named Stan Rogers who died in an untimely manner in an airliner fire on the ground in Cleveland. That was a third of a century ago but Stan Rogers remains very popular in this country to this day.

Well, I was very sad to hear of the death of Glen Campbell, a lovely singer excellent musician and apparently a much sought after session musician by the highest stars.

He died from a prolonged and arduous bout of Alzheimers disease aged 81.

Glen Campbell RIP. :(

He was very good and in his prime when I was in my teens. I only just learned that he worked pretty widely as a session musician for various rockers back then too.

Alzheimer's has to be the cruelest death of them all.

The best Canadian band has to be Nickleback ...such a sexy voice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR7vNcQ_grs

The best voice I have heard recently is the young singer from the Icelandic band Kaleo.

Quite why they aren't superstars I don't really know :rubchin:
