Just what is "social mobility?"

Social Mobility is a term being bandied about a lot recently. I suspect it means different things to different people.
I am not certain what it means or why it is supposed to be a good thing.

Keeping it simple, it's the ability to move up relative to ones social standing; to improve ones lot in life, and the absence of barriers designed to prevent said upward mobility. For example, the ability of working class youth to benefit from a grammar school education. And as an example of the barriers referred to above, the destruction of said grammar schools.

The government's own regulator defines it as the measure of how easy or not it is for someone of a "disadvantaged background to get on in life"

I'd say "why don't you ask a commisioner" but they all resigned last week in a fit of pique

Social mobility has nothing to do with the concept of class.There never was a subtext...jeez🙄

But that's what get's me, their contracts ended last July, how can you resign from a job you do not have?
