One wonders what CC will make of this tragic occurrence in Toronto with a man with a van mounted a sidewalk and killed 9 people and injured 16.

The man, who was later arrested by the police was named as Alek Minassian.

Now I am not jumping to conclusions but google searching tells me that the surname originates from Iran.

how much more of this before host nations start to turn against immigrants in a similar manner and take matters into their own hands, Western governments MUST take heed of their citizens concerns or ignore them at their peril.

I am in no way advocating vigilantism but obviously others will have their own thoughts and agendas.

My first reation to this horror was "Crap, it's finally spread to Canada..". If this really is a terrorist attack, it will be the second worst one on our history, after the bombing of an Air India flight by a Sikh in Vancouver. We've been pretty innocent, here.

The killer seems to have an Armenian name (could be Persian). There is a sizeable Armenian diaspora here but what possible motive could he have? The part of Toronto in which this attack occurred is just a bit south of a big Jewish area and that might lead us to conclude "Iranian" , although officialdom is not hurrying to identify his ethnicity. He is young (25) , obviously premeditated the attack and it looks as if he tried to commit "suicide by Cop". He left the van holding something in a provocative manner that made it look as if he was carrying a gun. He was actually holding out his wallet but it looks to me as if he was trying to provoke the police into gunning him down. The cop that took him down (alone!) is a cool customer, though and didn't take the bait. I was thinking that if the attack had happened anywhere on US soil, the attacker have been Swiss cheese in a second and would therefore have got his way.

I have walked on those very sidewalks, a lot, at one time if my life. It is a very busy commercial area and it is the first of such attacks in Canada so our preparedness for such events is not high. We didn't do battle with the IRA here (although, strangely enough, the first of our only two political asassinatons here was done by a Fenian against an Irish Canadian parliamentarian). Time will tell if this guy is a disgruntled Jihadist, etc. misfit immigrant. He may just be a lunatic with a Seratonin imbalance who speaks to God. You might be surprised but the real immigration crisis going on in Canada are the tens of thousands that are now trying to cross our southern border illegally escaping draconian visa laws in the United States. Some are Muslim. More are Catholic Haitians and Central Americans trying not to go back to either place in the wake of MAGA.

They haven't mentioned terrorism. He seems to have been disgruntled that he was celibate and couldn't get a girlfriend.

It would almost be easier if he an understandable motive ... religious madness ... political madness

but this guy is one sick puppy

Awful carnage ... Poor people.

He was an odd ball. There is a report that he started basic training with the Canadian Armed Forces and washed out after 16 whole days for having difficulty with the discipline.

Anyway, terrorism in the classic sense is not on the radar ... just another sick, young man. He is of Armenian descent and he selected the 103rd anniversary of the Armenian genocide to stage his own genocide. It's hard to comprehend the perverse logic that put those two events together. Had he done this in the USA, the weapon of choice would have been the now standard AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and not a rented van.

There is a great deal of praise for the cool-headed professionalism of the policeman who arrested the driver at a time when police all over are being criticized for shooting first, so that they don''t have to ask questions later.

By the way, the relatively low crime rate here is shown as the ten murdered yesterday spiked the year-to-date murder rate of Toronto by 60%. Had this happened in Chicago (a same sized city) it wouldn't have moved the needle at all.

Oh, also, one for the victims was Munir Abdu Habib Al-Najjar, a visiting Jordanian citizen.

Was good in all that appalling mess to see the sheer guts and humanity of that policeman faced with an apparent gun. How many of us in that situation wouldn't have just shot first and handcuffed later?

The victims are almost all women. This event has eerie similarities to another one almost thirty years ago in Montreal where another young man with social "issues" and an underlying hatred of women killed 14 of them during a shooting spree at a university.

What can one do to prevent sociopaths from killing? You can restrict their access to arms but, as we can see, they can always find another way. There aren't enough to jail cells or psychiatric beds to lock up every sexually frustrated young man.

Not likely to help address their issues in terms of how they view women.

Hmmm. It could be the first time in history that someone lost money at prostitution.
