Richard Garcia
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

The alarm screeches from nearby, its ear-splitting ring pierced my ears as I opened my eyes and stared at the roof above. My sheets were wrapped rather tightly around me, pulled up right to my neck in order to withstand the cold Australian winter night that had just flown by. I turned to my side, loosening the sheets a little and slammed my fists against the top of the alarm clock. The horrible screeching stops abruptly.

Time to wake up, I guess.

I turn to the other side to roll out of bed and notice the World Championship resting on the bed-side table nearby and the same emotions that had filled my heart day in and day out for the last two weeks all came rushing back as I stared at the glimmering golden championship with my name engraved into the nameplate below. ‘Richard Garcia’ it read, and a smile came across my face from ear to ear.

It had been two weeks almost to the exact time since the glorious moment where I stood tall in the Joe Louis Arena with the World Championship and since then the emotions that I felt that night all came flowing back when I woke up and stared at the World Championship that was placed nearby.

Everything I had worked so hard for had finally paid off, all the hours upon hours I spent perfecting my craft in the ring, all the hours I spent in the gym ensuring that I was in the best shape that I could be, all the time I had spent trying to make myself into the greatest wrestler and performer I could possibly be and all the injuries, including the concussion that put me on the shelf when I was at the top of my game. Through it, it had all finally paid off. It wasn’t simply a small payoff either, I had hit the jackpot.

Since winning the World Championship my media exposure had become much grander. The guest appearance, the autograph signing, the photography, everything, everyone seemed to want to get a word with the champion. But, this was to be expected and walking into Cross Roads a few weeks ago I knew that if I happened to walk out World Champion my life was going to take a huge turn…..a huge turn for the better.

So here I am, up at the early hours of the morning, having to prepare myself for yet another appearance as World Champion. I sat up in bed, placed my warm, naked feet against the cold floor, rubbed my eyes and took the biggest step anyone could day in a day, the first step out of a comfortable bed. I stood at the edge of the bed for a few moments to accustom myself to being awake before throwing on my clothes that I had hung up nearby, grabbing my World Championship off of the bed-side table nearby, throwing it over my shoulder and stepping out of the room, slamming the door behind me and wishing I could still be lying in my warm, comfortable bed, but knowing that if I did stay in bed and miss my guest appearance I would walk into the arena Monday night with my head on the chopping block. It would not be a great start for the new World Champion.

---

‘Hello everyone and welcome’ we hear a charismatic voice state from afar. ‘Thank you for patiently waiting. In a few moments the new UWF World Champion is going to walk out here and grace us with his presence and take time out of his busy schedule to talk to you all and answer any questions you happen to have’ the charismatic man standing on a nearby stage states.

Before us is a sea of people, well, not necessarily a sea but it is quite the gathering nonetheless. Every seat is filled and many people have been forced to stand up at the back of the segregated area assigned for my appearance. I peep from behind the curtains ensuring I cannot be seen and look out at the crowd in attendance that waits anxiously for my arrival. My heart skips a beat, I wrestle in front of thousands upon thousands of fans week in and week out, by talking to a few hundred for ten minutes is quite off-putting and nerve-racking.

Before I can even notice someone walks right up to where I am peeking through the curtain and asks me if I am ready to go on stage.

‘Sure, let’s get going’ I tell the random stranger. However deep down I am dreading the moment where I have to step out onto stage in front of the hundreds of people in attendance with all eyes focused on me and all ears focused on my words.

‘Okay people’ the charismatic man on stage says to the audience ‘Please put your hands together for the NEW UWF World Champion, Richard Garcia!’.

I hear the applause from the crowd and know that this is my cue to step out onto the stage. I place my hands against the curtains, take one deep breath in and then out and then push the curtains forward and step out on stage. The crowd is more daunting than it seemed from behind the curtain because now all eyes are on me. The applause loosens me up a little, but I am still rather apprehensive.

The charismatic man hosting the event hands me his microphone and claps his hands for me as he steps back and out of the spotlight. I stand in the middle of the stage, spotlight on me, my World Championship over my shoulder and hundreds watching on, waiting attentively for me to speak.

So, I decide to speak the truth, speak from my mind and let those in attendance dive right into the mind of the current reigning World Champion.

‘Hello ladies and gentlemen and thank you for coming by and checking me out. To say I am nervous would be putting it lightly. It’s one thing to stand in front of thousands upon thousands of fans at the Joe Louis Arena and do what I have been passionate about since a very early age, but it’s another to stand in front of hundreds upon hundreds of staring eyes and speak to you all about those experiences’ I tell the crowd as they listen attentively.

‘Since winning the UWF World Championship my life has changed. Before winning the World Championship I wasn’t use to doing this kind of thing. Sure, I made guest appearances, I spoke in front of crowds, I signed autographs and took pictures. However, I was the guy with the small line, looking over at bigger stars that had lines that multiplied my own. Now I am the star with the big line who doesn’t even have time to look over and compare my line to others. And sure, I speak in front of thousands on a weekly basis, but as I stated before, that’s my passion, every aspect of wrestling is my passion and has been since a young age. This though, I am not use to this. I don’t know, this may seem a little ridiculous to you all, but to me speaking in front of hundreds about my life is far more nerve-racking than calling out an opponent in front of thousands’ I tell the crowd as they hang onto my every word.

I grasp the World Championship in one hand and lift it off of my shoulder.

‘This, this World Championship, this is what I have worked towards since I was a small boy whilst I watched my father compete in the ring at live events and win championships over and over again. This is what all the blood, sweat and tears were for. This is what all the hours of strenuous exercise in the gym was for and this, this is what all the bumps and bruises and all the injuries I suffered whilst training and wrestling in the ring were for’.

‘But it feels so damn good to FINALLY have it over my shoulder, it feels incredible to know that my name is now engraved into the history books and that I will be known as a World Champion amongst many other tremendous World Champions who came before me’.

The crowd applauds as I finish up my speech. It gives me a warm feeling inside to know that so many care and that so many; whether they have followed me from the beginning or have just jumped aboard the Richard Garcia fan wagon recently are so supportive of me.

The charismatic man hosting the event, holding another microphone’ steps out onto the stage and addresses the crowd.

‘The World Champion is now going to take your questions. Put your hand into the air and someone will come over to you and hand you a microphone so you can ask your question’ the charismatic man says to the audience.

One of the members of staff rush over to a man with a furry jet black beard and short, balding hair and hands him a microphone.

‘Richard, hey…’ the man says, a little nervous.

‘Hey’ I respond cheerily.

‘So, do you have any advice for someone looking to get into the wrestling business?’ the bearded man asks before sitting back down, a little afraid of the current confronting situation he had been placed in by asking a question with all eyes on him.

‘Sure. Well first things first, you need to find yourself a reputable school to train with. You can always check out Blood Thirsty Action which is currently run by Matt Harrison but is also owned by the UWF Chairman, Dean James. They have their own training facility and Matt Harrison is the trainer, he trained with my father and is a damn good talent himself. He will help you get yourself trained. You also want to get yourself in shape, you want to make a good impression the moment you walk into a training facility. If you walk in out of breathe and out of shape the trainer will likely take one look at you and think you lack passion. It may not be fair, but that’s how things work’ I inform the questioner.

Another member of staff rushes over to another, this time a pretty young mousy haired girl and hands her a microphone.

‘So, umm, Richard. You and Dean James wanted to face each other mainstream for years now, right?’

‘Right’ I respond.

‘How was the feeling when you two stepped into the ring at Cross Roads?’ the mousy haired girl asks.

‘It was absolutely amazing, it felt like magic. Both myself and Dean James know each other’s styles very well so we know what each wrestler is going to bring to the table and we also know how to work with one another’s styles to make a tremendous match-up. Not only that but the both of us strive to bring a new, unpredictable aspect to our matches each and every week so there were also various moments where we pulled out manoeuvres that none of us were expecting. I think the match was absolutely tremendous and it felt absolutely great to be a part of such a classic match-up, and to win the World Championship within the match up made things even better. How did you all feel about the match?’

The crowd emits a loud roar of approval.

‘Okay, so next question’ I state to the audience.

Another member of staff hands over a microphone to another man who is sporting a jet-black ponytail and a distinctive Richard Garcia T-Shirt.

‘Hey, nice shirt, mate’ I tell the questioner.

‘Thanks’ the man with the ponytail replies ‘Hey, I was just wondering. What are your feelings regarding the match-up you have on this week’s Underground where you have to face off against Dean James again in a rematch for the World Championship?’ the man with the ponytail asks.

‘How do I feel? Hmm, excited. Was I expecting this match? No. I expected Dean James to cash in his rematch clause at The Ultimate Showdown to be honest, but I am excited nonetheless. I am appreciative that Dean James came to me first and gave me forewarning that he planned on cashing in this week. This match is going to be absolutely stellar and hopefully we can top our match from Cross Roads, I want to top it and knowing Dean James I am sure he wants to top it too’

‘But on top of that I also have a point to prove. Many people are claiming my victory to be a fluke and, although I couldn’t care less if they think I am a fluke, they are right in one respect. Can I do it again? Can I defeat Dean James again and walk out as World Champion? That’s the point I am going to need to prove this week on Underground, that I can be a successful champion and take on challenger after challenger rather than being a forgettable transitional champion’

‘This week’s match-up is going to be a lot of fun and I am glad that myself and Dean James can go a second round in front of a mainstream crowd, but this time around it isn’t simply about facing off against a friend. I have a point to prove to the naysayers and Dean James just so happens to be the challenger of the night, a hurdle that I am going to need to jump over if I want to continue being on top of the world’ I inform the crowd as they listen attentively.

‘Okay, so that is it for the World Champion’ says the host standing nearby.

‘Hold on, hold on’ I say as the host turns and looks at me. ‘There is one more thing on the agenda. I have a surprise for you all. If you have ever wondered what it feels like to be a World Champion get up on stage and I will let you hold the World Championship’ I inform the crowd to an eruption of cheers.

‘Okay folks, so form a line in front of the stage and you will be given a brief moment to hold the UWF World Championship before you will be ushered off stage. Be sure to get your cameras ready if you want a photo with the championship belt’ the host says as a line forms in front of the stage.

As the fans line up in single file and make their way up to hold my World Championship and take pictures with the championship and with me I ponder over all of this, over being World Champion, over having the world on my shoulders and over having to defend this championship against challengers. Are the naysayers right? Am I merely a one-hit wonder? Can I walk out of Underground still World Champion? And if so, can I then walk out of The Ultimate Showdown still as World Champion two weeks later? All I can do is put my best foot forward and hope that the naysayers aren’t right.
