Regaining Glory - Chapter One A False Perception Underground - 27/8/2012 The sun begins to rise over the tarmac of Kingsford Smith International Airport and the beautiful Sydney skyline becomes visible in the distance. Waiting in the flight lounge at 6am isn’t something I typically would enjoy. The fact I need to be up before the sun rises is already a pain. However, the coffee tastes nice and the paper is already printed. Sitting alone and up against the glass window, I pick up the cup of coffee and bring it towards my lips. Taking a slip, it races down and creates a burning sensation in my chest. A perfect way to warm the body on a chilly winter’s morning. I lean over and pick up the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper. Flicking over to the back, at the bottom, two images are printed. One of Richard Garcia holding the UWF World Championship after his victory over fellow Australian Dean James, Shaker Jones and CF Schulze. The other, myself sitting a top of the ladder, holding the Stairway to Heaven briefcase over my head. “Aussies Fly High In The Ring” is printed in bold letters across the bottom. It’s a good feeling to be back on top of the world. Well, my world at least. To be able to put so much behind me is impossible when the job isn’t done yet. Still, it felt good to sit there in front of thousands of screaming fans knowing I had secured the one thing I’ve strived to gain over the past several months. A one on one title match. To go through so many obstacles only to fall short at each and every one of them, then having to back up and fight for another opportunity became a common practise. The seed of disbelief started to grow. The Ultimate Showdown removed that. The briefcase allows me to cash in anytime and anywhere. This victory has done nothing but rebooted the confidence within that I had lost. Confidence that I felt slipping week in and week out. The briefcase holds the element of surprise. Desmond Helms and Shaker Jones, the previous two holders of this briefcase have cashed in when their opponents have been down. Unlike both men, I hold level of integrity and respect that would be thrown out the window If I were to cash in on an unsuspecting champion. I could have ran out there, cashed in and stolen the light that Richard Garcia had earned. That final image of The Ultimate Showdown could have been me finally regaining something I prematurely lost so long ago. My defeat at Seven Deadly Sins last year taught me better. Taught me a lesson of only taking from those who don’t deserve it. Garcia certainly deserves his place at the top. It would have been wrong for me to take that away the moment each and everyone of us strives for. The temptation was almost too good to resist. Almost. It’s hard to stay awake when all you’ve done for the past couple of days is fly from one end of Australia to the other. From Sydney to Perth and back before flying to Brisbane and down to Melbourne. Yesterday was my only real day of relaxation and that was spent seeing family and friends. Some question why I bother flying from Sydney to Los Angeles and back every week. It’s my love for this country and the fact I wear my pride on my sleeve that keeps me coming home. I’ve become well adjusted to the travel. Still, sitting here at the break of dawn isn’t desirable. I’d rather be laying in a warm and comfortable bed, turning my head when I wake up early due to the consistency of waking up early to avoid the rising sun, throwing my fist onto the alarm clock just, hoping to hit the snooze button and in the back of my mind, praying that I broke it so I don’t have to do it again in a few minutes time. This morning felt....different. I was motivated to get up and drive to the airport at 3am. Why? That’s something I’m still trying to figure out but no doubt winning Stairway to Heaven is a factor. I can’t help but think of my past year. The year of failure, the year of defeat. I thought 2012 would be the same. No different whatsoever but all that did was create doubt. I can now sit back and look at those nights as distant memories and even though my history can’t be removed, I can make up for every single defeat. And that starts with the UWF World Championship. Underground should mark a pinnacle night. These past few days have allowed me to go over my choices in between the media interviews and appearances. I’ve made my choice which to many would lead to some questions being raised but it would be idiotic to go with the voices around me rather than the voice inside me. Perhaps its foolish, perhaps it’s not. Only time will tell if my decision is worth it. It also marks the night I can begin to build momentum towards my title match. The one night where two years of hard work comes to an end by recapturing what I desire. It’s unfortunately that Verseptine is first. Or perhaps it’s a good thing. A strong and tough competitor is what I need begin my rise back to the top and, well, I doubt she’ll be anything less than tough. Her performance in the Stairway to Heaven match was nothing short of impressive however her inability to beat me gives doesn’t do much confidence wise. To debut in unknown territory is tough and to debut in a match where so much is at stake puts pressure on you to prove that worth worthy of such entry into the company. I can only congratulate her on her impressive start. Look back out onto the tarmac, a plane roars down the runway and takes off. As a kid, air travel was the absolutely pinnacle for me. I never had the opportunity to fly much, but when I did, I made every trip feel exciting. Waking up early, getting to the airport hours before the flight, even before they opened the check-in desk. Two decades later and I still love air travel although about half way through I tend to go a little insane due to the extreme lengths. Not realising I’d zoned out, A voice bellows from the speaker in the far corner of the lounge. “Flight QF7. To Los Angeles, California, will be arriving soon. Please make your way to the terminal.” I continued to look out onto the tarmac and continued to watch planes come and go. Moments pass and another voice bellows from the speaker. “Flight QF7. To Los Angeles, California, is preparing to board. Please immediately make your way to the terminal for boarding.” “SHIT!” I softly say before moving the coffee away from the counter in front of me and tuck the newspaper under my arm before picking up my carry on bag and proceeding to the terminal. Thankfully, the terminal was only a short walk. A minute later and I found myself at the end of the First Class line. With my passport and ticket in hand, I hand them to the flight attendant who tears one end of the ticket and checked my passport. She looks back up, smiles and hands them back. “I hope you enjoy your flight” She said. I politely nod and begin to head down the tunnel towards my plane. Boarding the plane, I hand my ticket over to another flight attendant. She peers down at the ticket before handing it back to me and points to the left towards the front of the plane. “Row C, seat One, sir” She said with a warm, welcoming smile across her face. Nodding in appreciation, I head towards the front of the plane. To row C, seat one. Sitting down in the same seat I sat in when I last flew to San Francisco for The Ultimate Showdown, I lean over and look of my window. In the distance, the stormy clouds from the west begin to roll in over the city skyline as rain lightly begins to fall onto the tarmac and splatter on the surface of my window. Not much longer till Monday; till Underground, an important night and the first step towards reclaiming my lost glory. *********** Vespertine, you were that unknown denominator in the Stairway To Heaven match. A denominator that I couldn’t predict. Unlike you, I knew what I was getting myself into going up against Venom and Hawk. Two superstars who I've bumped into once or twice in the past and have seen develop from meer jobbers on this federation's previous training ground, to men who have held the Heritage championship. And as for Lucifer Creed? You seemed intimidated by the beast? Don’t be. Unless he locks you away in a prison, then he’s no real threat. Even throwing me into his path done very little. It’s something I’ve become rather well acquainted with over the years. These things you learn. I didn’t know if I should have felt disrespected or mock the fact you underestimated me. I recall you proclaiming that I was “just another guy you’ve seen before”. I suppose it would have been a bit of a rude awakening when I knocked you off that ladder? Being new in a company is never easy and we all look to cut any corners. However, I must say you bit off a bit more than you could chew and now you seek some sort of “redemption”? You see me as a mere obstacle with the general belief I’m just a stepping stone for you. This is where I can’t help but mock your lack of understand. I’m no mere stepping stone. I’ve accomplished more this company than most of the guys who have stepped foot in our ring. I’ve been at the very top before and It’s only a matter of time until I reach it again. I’m not someone who has has sat around the middle of the card since I arrived here so if you’re looking for a stepping stone that will perhaps lead you onto bigger and better things here than I suggest you start looking for another one. It’s funny how we both seem to have different beliefs on where our match on Underground lies. You believe that being first on the card is a bad thing? To me, it’s a chance to be the first one to impress. However, I have something planned for Richard Garcia prior to our match, to open the show. If you, somehow, manage to defeat me it would be unfortunate that the talking point won’t be how Vespertine defeated Jamie O’Hara. I’ll still be the one they’re talking about, just for a different reason. Our match will only have two guarantees, you’ll be making your Underground debut and I’ll still have a world championship match in my grasp. You say I should cherish my title opportunity because I stole it from you but I think you should cherish something of your own. The list of men that have fallen when I’ve kicked their jaws to the other side of their face is quite considerable and I won’t hold back on a woman. Pray to God you do beat me because if you don’t, there’s only one way I look to win. Come Underground, your entire perception of me will unravel on Underground. |
