I’m Lucius Graves. It’s June 5th, 1349 and the plague epidemic is at an all-time high. The plague isn’t a new epidemic but it has reached its most intense over the past year or so. Millions have died at the hand of this great pestilence and thousands more lay infected, waiting for their time to be taken away from a world that has been shrouded in darkness, little hope on the horizon.

I never wanted to do this job to begin with; I was an ordinary merchant selling my products on the street until one day I was approached by members of the shire and asked to become a physician to help with this epidemic. I had no prior experience, but I was told I didn’t need any. It seemed as if most of the physicians who had credentials either fled from the town or had died whilst on the job, having contracted the plague themselves as a result of having attended to diseased and suffering clients.

I was handed a leather mask with a long bird beak for a nose and glassed eye openings and a long, heavy fabric overcoat that was waxed up and told to put the attire on as it would protect me from contracting the disease myself. Inside of the beak of the mask was straw and a form of scented substances that apparently helps mask the bad smell of those infected and further help avoid contracting the plague.

So here I stand over a sea of diseased bodies helping others who had been thrust into the same position as I; being a physician with no credentials, in charge of helping those who had the plague in a hopeless effort to save lives destined to lose their mortality. The worst part about the job wasn’t tending to those infected and looking for a cure, it was tending to the families of those who had lost love ones. Despite the millions had died already and the hundreds of families I had attended to and consolidated it was still never easy to inform a family they were never going to see one of their loved ones again.

Earlier on today I stood before a distraught family, struggling to find the words to inform them that their youngest daughter had passed on to the afterlife and that her lifeless body had been dumped into a hole with a thousand other lifeless bodies who had suffered the same fate. The graveyards were full so we had no other option but to just dump bodies into one giant hole or, even worse, throw the bodies onto a pile and set them alight and watch as the bodies burned and the ashes flew through the air and scattered across the town that had been their death ground.

I took a deep breath, gulped and addressed the family sitting patiently before me.

‘It’s not easy for me to say this, but your daughter has in fact passed away as a result of the plague epidemic’, the mother in particular starts crying her eyes out. I take another huge gulp and continue on. ‘On behalf of the shire we are sorry for your loss’.

These words start losing all meaning when you have had to say them more times than you dare count.

‘There will be a ceremony later on in the evening for those who have passed away today, you’re all welcome to attend and celebrate the life of your daughter’ I inform the family.

I stare back over the sea of diseased people, wondering who will be next to go and which family I will have to attend to next. This is no way to live, having to face your own mortality, not knowing if today will be your last day on this world.

It’s such a grey world, I see no colour.

‘This is getting ridiculous’ one of the other assigned physicians nearby says to me. ‘I can barely breath under this mask and heavy overcoat. The scents in the beak are choking me from the inside. Having to attend to diseased patients, dealing with the families of the deceased, it’s just far too overwhelming to bare. No wonder why so many physicians have disappeared off of the face of the Earth’ the man, dressed almost identical to myself rambles on.

‘Does anyone have any idea how this has gotten so out of control?’ I ask the man standing next to me.

‘No clue, I think if they did this thing would be dying down. But instead we are ostracising the diseased from the rest of the townspeople in hope that the plague won’t continue to spread, but the ostracising of the diseased people just doesn’t seem to be working, there are new cases of the plague every single day’ the man standing next to me replies.

‘Maybe God is merely punishing us for our sins, it’s the only explanation at this point’ I inform the man standing next to me.

‘Hmm, at this point I think anything is possible’ the man standing next to me replies.

‘You two! Back to work!’ a higher up yells from nearby.

‘I guess we need to get back to it then’ the man standing nearby says before heading back into the sea of diseased people to tend to another patient.

Nearby a group of kids play, they are all intertwined by each other’s hand and dance around in a circle. It’s awe-inspiring to see that in their darkest hour they can still be positive and playful.

‘Ring around a rosy’ the children sing in unison. ‘A pocket full of posies. A tissue, a tissue, we all fall down’. With that all the children fall like a feather to the floor in a playful manner. They all stand up, all except one who lies motionless on the floor; slowly turning white and cold, froth emerging from the corners of the child’s mouth. Suddenly the child begins to violently jerk as the child loses control of their own muscles. The jerking last only for a few seconds before the child once again lies motionless and dead silent. It’s quite clear the child has lost the battle, they have moved on to the afterlife.

The others around the dead child pay no attention to what has happened. The family of the recently deceased rush over to the child, the mother pounces on top of the child and hugs the child to her chest and cries her eyes out as the children nearby, intertwined once more, sing and dance once more like nothing has happened.

‘Ring around a rosy, a pocket full of posies. A tissue, a tissue, we all fall down’.

‘Ring around a rosy, a pocket full of posies. A tissue, a tissue, we all fall down. Hahaha’

We are met with a dimly lit scene. The room is lit by several candles placed in random places around the room and standing in the middle of the room is none other than Lucifer Creed.

‘See, this mask I done represents one of the darkest times in history. I was unfortunate to suffer burns to my face and back at The Ultimate Showdown and was forced to wear a mask to protect my face from further damage, but the reason I wear this particular mask is that I represent the darkest time in UWF history. Take a look back at the history of the UWF and look for the darkest moment you can find, what similarities do each moment possess? I am involved in every one of them’

‘Termination X, I was embroiled in a fed with their leader. Age Of The Fall, I was the man waiting in the wings. The arrival of Wormwood, I was the one that out him through the psychological trauma in order to ensure that he was ready to fall from the sky. Take the antics from the Church Of Lucifer since our formation and you have several more examples. The point being, I am the living embodiment of darkness’

‘How does anyone expect to dethrone a man who cannot be destroyed? I have suffered through multiple burns, I have bleed in various rings all around the world, I have made others bleed in various rings around the world. I have toppled the greatest challenges this industry has to offer and have been in the most gruesome matches imaginable and still, here I stand. I am a damn epidemic destined to plague the UWF. Do I care that I may bring the downfall of the UWF? Absolutely not! I am here to bring pain and suffering to those who deserve it, those within society who ostracise the likes of me simply for being ‘abnormal’ and different’.

‘Anthony Hawk and Jeff Turner plan to do what many others could not, and that is dethrone the Church Of Lucifer. We have reigned as Tag Team Champions for over five hundred days, what makes them think or anyone else think for that matter that they can dethrone the almighty Church Of Lucifer?’
