The Windy City Underground 9/10/2012 The sun sits high at noon over the Chicago skyline on a rather chilled summers day and I find myself sitting by a pier that looks out onto Lake Michigan in a nice little cafe. The smell of freshly made coffee hangs in the air and clashes with the breeze coming from the lake. I reach down and pick up my cuppa off the wooden table and look down at it. ‘I drink way too much of this’, I softly say to myself before bringing it towards my lips and begin to sip it down. ‘But it tastes damn good’. A lazy day, people walk and stop along the pier to enjoy the sights of the lake. The pier stretches down the coast, as far as the eye can see and is lined with small cafe’s, food and general merchandise stalls and entertainment. A different aroma every time you pass a different stall. A different sound every time you pass a different entertainer. Enjoying the sound of jazz in the background on a cool summer day, I sink into my seat and just enjoy the sight and sounds.... I’ve thought about my decision last week to announce my cash in and all week long I’ve received messages from people calling me impatient, stupid for not taking full advantage of the Stairway to Heaven briefcase. Perhaps these are the same people who don’t quite fully understand the circumstances I’ve faced over the previous twelve months. However, it’s not something I want to look back on. Not for now as those memories are ones I look to rectify at Seven Deadly Sins. My match at Seven Deadly Sins needs to wait just a little longer. In a short few days, I’m set to face Joey McArthur; The ‘You Dubba Eff, King of Wrasslin’, as he tends to pronounce it. I have to give credit to the man. He’s done something not even I could do and that was push Dean James to the limit earlier this year at New Years Retribution. To maintain an unpinned, unsubmitted record for the most part of his venture here is nothing but impressive. His loss to Boris Neshkabov at The Ultimate Showdown looks like nothing more than a blemish. It’s clear both myself and Joey have better things on our minds than each other. I don’t think that man is mentally stable and being mentally unstable in the past, it’s not something I’d particular wish upon anyone. Boris had approached me earlier on Underground last week and asked If I would be his poison and I couldn’t turn him away. Beating McArthur would be greatly beneficial heading into their rematch at Seven Deadly Sins. And now I hear it’s an “I Quit” match? Too bad I’ll be too focused on recapturing the title to watch it. ‘Would you like anything else sir?’ Says a voice I took barely notice of, but enough to respond. I look up and a gentlemen dressed in black shirt, pants, shoes and wearing a red apron with the cafe’s logo splashed across the front stares down at me with a smile across his face. “No thank you”, I respond politely. The staff member turns back around and makes his way back behind the counter. It’s unfortunate I was selected to face McArthur considering my title match is only a bit over a week away. Momentum is key to my victory at Seven Deadly Sins. No momentum, no title coming home. My victory over Vespertine propelled me towards a new outlook on my current position. Perhaps the reason for my defeats was that I underestimated myself everytime into the ring. However, that’s all in the past from here on out. McArthur is just like Vespertine, a stepping stone towards bigger things. Beat McArthur, who’s to say momentum doesn’t rest in the palm of my hand? Garcia hasn’t competed since The Ultimate Showdown. I sit back up in my chair and decide to head back to my hotel. Leaving the empty cup of coffee, I begin to make my way up the pier, passing the aromas and sounds. On a day like this, it’s a crime to be locked up inside a car, on a plane, on a bus or in a hotel room. Not a single cloud in the sky. My days off from the ring tend to be enjoyed this way. Exploring a particular city as I move from one site to another. That is unless I decide to fly back home for the week but I enjoy seeing the sites of America I’d never really get the opportunity to do so. Flying home is nothing more than a two day weekend. The flight home tends to suck up Tuesday and Wednesday and the flight back steals away Saturday. This option is far more relaxing as I’m not trying to cram two weeks of interviews and media appearances in a day or two. Chicago ranks up there as one of my favourite cities to visit. At times I’ve considered making the big move over. Each time I tend to visit some sort of apartment building or home on the outskirts of the city and each time the desire to live in the windy city becomes greater and greater. One major positive is indeed the significantly easier schedule. Last week I found myself a little overwhelmed by both the pressure of my match and also the amount of travel. I can only assume come Monday night I’ll be in a better position after I fly out tomorrow morning. Perhaps once Seven Deadly Sins is done and dusted and I receive a little ‘champions bonus’, I could look at making the move. McArthur isn’t the only thing I need to prepare for on Underground. It seems Reverend Wormwood has established a contract signing. It will give me an opportunity to look at Richard Garcia dead in the eyes and tell him his days are numbered and at the end of the night, I’ll be leaving with it in my hands. Third time's the charm. Right? Reaching the end of the pier, I look out onto Lake Michigan before turning back around and admiring the skyscrapers of the city that tower above. I think the windy city would suit me. Very much so. |
