CINCINNATI -- Johnny Cueto had one more chance to prove he belongs at the All-Star Game, and it was almost derailed by a back that twisted and knotted on him like an Auntie Anne's pretzel.

Cueto stuck it out and then struck down the D-backs for six innings during a 1-0 victory on Wednesday night. Joey Votto's sixth-inning single gave both team and Cueto the victory.

"In the bullpen before the game, I was good," Cueto said. "As soon as the game started, my back was getting tight. That's why I was missing location big-time tonight."

Cueto gave up just one hit, Felipe Lopez's third-inning infield single that deflected off of the pitcher's leg. He also walked four and struck out eight, throwing 108 pitches.

All four walks came during the first two innings, including both leadoff batters as Cueto clearly wasn't right, throwing 46 pitches in that time. After eighth batter Chad Tracy walked in and put two on with two out in the Arizona second, manager Dusty Baker and the trainer came out to check on Cueto.

"His back was stiff on him early, and we thought we'd have to go get him," Baker said. "I was very concerned. Even when I went out there to talk to him, the umpire [Hunter Wendelstedt] said he wasn't himself. The umpires know the pitchers as well as anybody."

"I wanted to stay in the game," Cueto said.

Good thing for the Reds that he did. Cueto struck out D-Backs starter Jon Garland to finish the second, and after Lopez's leadoff hit in the third, Cueto retired his final 12 batters in a row.

Credit strength and conditioning coordinator Matt Krause with an assist.

"I came in after the second inning, and they stretched my back, big-time," Cueto said. "After that, I started feeling better and better."

Arizona clearly noticed. Cueto was throwing in the low 90s in the early going, but had reached 95 mph when he struck out Miguel Montero to end the top of the fourth.

"You could see him stretching it between innings," D-backs manager A.J. Hinch said. "His back was bothering him. He dialed it up a little bit in the middle innings and began throwing a little harder, so apparently it loosened up."

The game was still scoreless in the Cincinnati sixth when Chris Dickerson led off with a single to center field off Garland and moved to second base on a groundout. Votto was jammed by a 0-1 pitch and blooped a single into short left-center field that scored Dickerson with the game's lone run.

It wasn't pretty but it was just enough.

"It's Canada Day," said Votto, a Toronto native. "Happy Canada Day to me and the Cincinnati Reds. But it's an American team, so I'm going to enjoy this one."

In a dicey moment in the Arizona seventh, reliever Arthur Rhodes struggled and had runners on second and third with one out, and then the bases loaded with two outs after an infield hit and two walks. Rhodes fell into a full count with Lopez, who left the bases full when he ended the inning with a flyout to right field.

Working the eighth, reliever David Weathers gave the Reds a 1-2-3 inning. Francisco Cordero pitched the ninth and closed the game for his 19th save in 20 chances.

"Our bullpen came in and did the job, but I felt like Johnny beat them singlehandedly today," Votto said.

This was an important win for the Reds, who climbed back to a .500 record at 38-38. A loss by the first-place Brewers has third-place Cincinnati only three games out in the National League Central.

"Frankly, looking at the scoreboard, it's nice to have gotten it," Votto said of his game-winner. "But I really don't care. It put us back to .500 and puts a little pressure on Milwaukee and St. Louis. We've got to really grind it out, especially over this next little while, and let everybody know we're for real."

Is Cueto for real as an All-Star? He will find out on Sunday when both league's rosters are revealed. The 23-year-old is 8-4 with a 2.69 ERA in 16 starts. He entered the night sixth in the NL in ERA and eighth in opponents' batting average, but was not on the leader board in strikeouts. The win has him tied with many for fourth in victories.

"Maybe, I don't know. Yes," Cueto said when asked about his chances to go to St. Louis. "I'm fighting to get into the All-Star Game."
