Preview: #14 California at Colorado State @ ![]() After a season-opening win that featured monster performances by running back Justin Forsett and cornerback Syd'Quan Thompson over Tennessee, ranked #15, the California Golden Bears look to keep up their strong performance in the early-going this season against the Colorado State Rams. Forsett and Thompson accounted for all five of the Golden Bears' touchdowns in the defeat over Tennessee, who beat California to open last season. "Hopefully starting off on the right foot this season will help us elevate to a different level than where we were at least season," said Junior safety Thomas DeCoud of the team's opening day victory. Wide receiver DeSean Jackson will look to rebound in a big way after catching no passes in the first game of the season against a very weak Colorado State secondary. The Rams look to pull of the upset after a heart-breaking 41-35 loss to in-state rival Colorado last week. In that game, 465 total yards on defense to a Colorado offense that pales in comparison to Cal's high-octane offense that features some of the best players in the country. "We really think we can take advantage of them," said quarterback Nate Longshore of the match up against Colorado State's defense. ![]() Herbstreit says: Look for the combination of Nate Longshore and DeSean Jackson to come out early against Colorado State's weak defense to show that this offense still can pass the ball efficiently despite last week's performance. Cal in a blowout. ![]() Corso says: Syd'Quan Thompson and the Cal defense were thought to be weak coming into the season, but they showed last week what kind of a unit they will be. I say they'll shut down the Rams' offense and come away with an easy victory. TV info: ![]() 6:30 PM PST |

Offense sputters, but defense pulls through in big win over CSU ----![]() #14 California 35 Colorado State 14 ![]() Jesse Brooks leaps into the endzone after returning an interception in the second quarter of the game. FORT COLLINS, CO--On a day of inconsistency and minor struggles from the California Golden Bears' offense, the team's defense, thought to be their weakness, pulled through to give Cal a three touchdown victory over the Colorado State Rams. The defense gave up just fourteen points to an above-average Colorado State offense and scored fourteen points of their own on interception returns by cornerback Jesse Brooks and middle linebacker Greg Van Hoesen. "They played their hearts out today and were really the key to victory," said Cal defensive coordinator Bob Gregory of his team's effort in the game. The unit had many players step up from all positions to contribute to an outstanding defensive effort. Cornerback Jesse Brooks was one of those players, recording five tackles (tied for the team high) and a 46 yard interception return for a touchdown near the end of the second quarter. Van Hoesen also intercepted a pass near the end of that quarter, taking it 35 yards for a score. Defensive end Phillip Mbakogu had a monster game against Colorado State's Dane Stratton, a first-year starter at right tackle. Mbakogu recorded two of Cal's five sacks and also had three tackles in the game, all for a loss. "He's an animal up front," said defensive line coach Ken Delgado of his emerging star at defensive end. Syd'Quan Thompson followed up his monster game against Tennessee with another great effort, recording five tackles and three pass deflections. Though the offense struggled against Colorado State's weak defense, scoring just 21 points, it did have many bright spots. Senior tailback Justin Forsett followed up his 3 touchdown performance against Tennessee with another dazzling effort, rushing 14 times for 134 yards and one touchdown, with a yards per carry of 9.5. Forsett had the play of the day for the offense, breaking off a 78 yard run in the second quarter to put Cal up by two touchdowns. The Golden Bears' other All-American receiver, senior Lavelle Hawkins also had a great game, catching three passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns. "He's in the shadow of DeSean [Jackson] all the time and people forget that he's such a great player too, so they leave him open while they blanket DeSean and he makes you pay," said receivers coach Don Feringo of Hawkins' efforts. Jackson had another puzzling day, catching just one pass, on the Golden Bears' first drive of the game, then getting shut-out the rest of the game. "He's a tough guy, he'll pull through," said offensive coordinator Jim Michalczik of his star receiver's struggles to begin the season. Nate Longshore had just 174 yards through the air, and had two touchdowns and interceptions each. "The O-Line needs to give him better protection so he can make better decisions," said Michaliczik of Longshore, who was sacked four times in the game. ![]() Offensive performance of the game: ![]() Lavelle Hawkins, 3 catches, 131 yards, 2 TD ![]() Defensive performance of the game: ![]() Jesse Brooks 5 tackles, 1 INT, 1 TD |
