Preview: Louisiana Tech at #14 California @ ![]() The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs visit the California Golden Bears in a non-conference matchup between Pac-10 and WAC foes. After a three touchdown victory over Colorado State, California looks to keep up their strong defensive play against a Louisiana Tech team that ranks 91st in the nation in total offense. Cal's offense hasn't been as great as expected, and they will look for the talented DeSean Jackson to have a breakthrough game to show that he is still the go-to guy on the offense despite two horrible games to open the season. The Bulldogs lost by 30 points last week to conference rivals Hawaii, ranked #24 in the nation, and it doesn't get much easier with the #14 ranked Golden Bears next on the schedule. A weak running game and lack of overall defense contributed to the blowout loss against Hawaii, and could contribute to another against California. ![]() Herbstreit says: Louisiana Tech is weak everywhere on defense except up the middle, so look for California to exploit that by utilizing outside passing routes and outside runs. The Golden Bears' offense will get back on track in a big win. ![]() Corso says: The Bulldogs are nothing compared to the Golden Bears and I think Cal will win this one easily. But, yo, DeSean Jackson, sweetheart, you gotta make some plays out there, kid or your team will have no shot when they get into conference play. TV info: ![]() 6:30 PM PST |

Jackson, Longshore have monster games in defeat of La. Tech -------![]() Louisiana Tech 29 #14 California 47 ![]() DeSean Jackson celebrates his third touchdown of the game during the third quarter. BERKLEY, CA--During the first two games of Cal's season, the two names "Longshore" and "Jackson" together with the word "touchdown", which were a common site during last season, were never heard once. However, the duo of juniors connected on three separate touchdown passes to vault the California Golden Bears to a 47 to 29 defeat of the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. The first of their touchdowns came during the middle of the second quarter on a 34 yard pass with Jackson leaping over a defender. The second touchdown, during the early third quarter, was just one yard, following a 40 yard interception return by Syd'Quan Thompson to the one yard line. On the play, Jackson lined up as a tight end in a goal line formation and became wide open in the end zone after a perfect play fake was performed by Longshore. the duo also connected during the late third quarter, on a 42 yard slant route where Jackson outran the defensive backs, instead of out leaping them. Longshore also had, by far, his best and most efficient game of the season. The junior completed 10 of 18 passes for 235 yards and four touchdowns to zero interceptions. Receiver Lavelle Hawkins had just one catch in the game, but it was a big one, as his 50 yard touchdown receptions gave the Golden Bears a 10 point lead in the first quarter. Justin Forsett had a great day running the ball, running for 123 yards on 22 carries. He did not score in the game and lost one fumble. Despite giving up a season-high 29 points today, the Golden Bears' defense played well when it mattered, recording four interceptions. Two of these interceptions were from junior safety Thomas DeCoud, and he returned one of them for a touchdown. DeCoud also recorded a key forced fumble during the third quarter that was recovered by sophomore cornerback Syd'Quan Thompson. Thompson had another great game today, recording 10 tackles, one interception, and one fumble recovery. He had 70 total yards in turnover recoveries. Defensive captain Justin Moye recorded eight tackles in the game and backup strong safety Marcus Ezeff had an interception and five tackles in the game. Senior kicker Tom Schneider had a very solid day, counting for 17 of Cal's 47 points. Schneider made all four of his field goals at distances of 27 yards, 20 yards, 38 yards, and 50 yards. He also made all five of his extra points. When Louisiana tech star running back Patrick Jackson was injured, it left the door open for Sophomore Daniel Porter, who, almost singlehandedly, stepped up to keep the Bulldogs in the game. The 5'9" tailback rushed for 82 yards on just 12 carries and scored three touchdowns for the Bulldogs on the ground. ![]() Offensive performance of the game: ![]() DeSean Jackson 7 receptions, 168 yards, 3 TD ![]() Defensive performance of the game: ![]() Thomas DeCoud 4 tackles, 2 INT, 1 TD, 1 FF |

Preview: Arizona at #13 California @ ![]() Two 3-0 squads, the California Golden Bears and the Arizona Wildcats, do battle to begin their Pac-10 schedules for the 2007 season in week 4. The Golden Bears have had a tougher road to their 3-0 record with a resume that includes a win against SEC powerhouse Tennessee. Last week against Louisiana Tech, wide receiver DeSean Jackson and quarterback Nate Longshore had great games to lead the Golden Bears to victory after each of those players struggled in wins during the first two games. When those two play as well as they did with the rest of the offense rolling on all cylinders, Cal is very hard to beat. The Golden Bears also have a turnover differential of +6, good for 3rd in the country. Arizona on the other hand, opened with a soft out of conference schedule, facing just two Division I squads, BYU and New Mexico, who have a combined record of 1-5. They have put up solid numbers, ranking 11th in the nation in points per game. They have the 18th ranked pass offense in the country, led by offensive captain, wide receiver Mike Thomas, who is 2nd in the Pac-10 in receiving yards with 291 through three games. ![]() Herbstreit says: The Cal offense showed what they're capable of doing last week when they're firing on all cylinders and I expect them to keep up their strong performance against Arizona. Cal by three touchdowns. ![]() Corso says: Yo, Arizona, if you guys want to be considered a top team in the Pac-10 why don't you play some tough games out of conference? Cal had the same success as Arizona to start the year, but they actually played quality teams! Cal will win this one easily. TV info: ![]() 3:30 PM PST |

It was his second of the game. BERKLEY, CA--The Cal Golden Bears played on a low level today against a quality opponent, but they pulled out a victory thanks to efforts from numerous players. Sophomore cornerback Jesse Brooks, thought by many to be a liability to the defense before the season, showed he is far from being that, as he came away with two interceptions in the game, including a late pick that Brooks returned for a touchdown to seal the game in favor of the Golden Bears. Brooks had a solid all-around performance, also collecting six tackles and two pass deflections. "People thought he would be a problem for the defense, but he's stepped up and really impressed some people," said defensive backs coach R. Todd Littlejohn. Superstar wide receiver had another decent performance and was the only steady performer in the offense today, catching 5 passes for 103 yards and one touchdowns. His touchdown came in the middle of the second quarter, with backup quarterback Kyle Reed in due to a minor injury to Nate Longshore. Reed threw it to the back of the endzone and Jackson leaped over two defenders, brought the ball down with one hand, and kept both feet in to give the Golden Bears. "That's one of the best if not the best catch I've ever seen," said teammate Lavelle Hawkins. Except for a drive during the early fourth quarter where he rushed for over forty yards, Justin Forsett struggled today, but because of that drive where he came away with his lone touchdown, the senior halfback came away with 23 rushes for 7 yards. He also fumbled once in the game. During the second quarter, junior quarterback suffered a rib injury and was not himself after coming in. Longshore completed just 10 of 25 passes for 178 yards. He had one touchdown and two interceptions. He also had two fumbles and was sacked four times in the game. "He'll be better, the O-Line just has to protect him better. We've got a young O-Line and veterans at the skill positions, and it will take awhile to mesh," said offensive coordinator Jim Michalczik. It was one extreme or the other for sophomore backup quarterback Kyle Reed. He threw just two passes, completing one for a 36 yard touchdown to DeSean Jackson, and throwing an interception. He also had one rush for eleven yards and was sacked two times during his time at the helm. Senior slot receiver Robert Jordan had just one catch, a 40 yard touchdown in the third quarter. Other key defensive performers besides Brooks were junior linebacker Anthony Felder, who recorded 7 tackles (4 for loss) and one sack. Backup strong safety Marcus Ezeff had just two tackles in the game, but recorded two turnovers in limited play, with one interception and one forced fumble that came on a punt return by Arizona in the fourth quarter. Arizona quarterback Willie Tuitama had an up and down day, completing 20 of 37 passes for 246 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. He spread the ball all around the field, completing passes to seven different receivers. The most surprising of these receivers was cornerback Antoine Cason, who played a few snaps on offense and made an impact, catching two passes for 79 yards and a touchdown, including a long 75 yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter. Senior kicker Tom Schneider missed his first field goal of the season, a 36 yarder during the third quarter. Overall, he made two of three field goals and all four of his extra points in the game. ![]() Offensive performance of the game: ![]() DeSean Jackson 5 receptions, 103 yards, TD ![]() Defensive performance of the game: ![]() Jesse Brooks 6 tackles, 2 INT, TD, 2 deflections Video Highlights [doHTML] [/doHTML] |
