Can a player choose what cap will be on their picture when they are inducted into the hall of fame?

My friend and I were having a discussion about Roger Clemens. He says that a player can choose what cap and when Clemens gets inducted he will choose the Yankee cap. I said that its not the players decision, its the voters(But im not sure if thats true). And I believed that the would go in with the Red Sox cap since he put up his best numbers when he was there

Most players are allowed to choose.

But sometimes either Baseball or the Hall of Fame will step in for what they deem to be the Hall of Fame's or Baseball's best interests.

For example, they wouldn't let Wade Boggs wear a Devil Rays cap for the Hall of Fame.

Actually, I just researched it because this thread brought upon myself something I wanted to look up. Whether Andre Dawson has said if he'll wear a Cubs cap or not when he gets inducted. And I discovered that I was wrong. :o

In the event of a player earning induction into the Hall of Fame, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum staff will decide which logo appears on his plaque. This rule was made in part to the Wade Boggs saga. Despite acheiving most in his career elsewhere, Boggs insisted to wear a Devil Rays cap. The Baseball Hall of Fame wouldn't let him. A clause in Boggs' contract with the Devil Rays stated that he'd have to wear a Devil Rays cap into the Hall of Fame.

I am fine with letting the HOF choose which hat they wear, just as long as its the team he put up the best numbers with. Like if they even try to put Randy Johnson in a Yankee uni instead of a Dbacks one (which they wont), then it should be overturned.

What about piazza? Does he go in as a Met or a Dodger? It should be up to the player. The HOF has no right to make these calls.

Yea, but think about the players who played on a team for a little bit, but wants to be known as playing for that team, and not the team he had the most success with. Again, like if Johnson wants to be with the Yankees, he should not be allowed to. If he is not forced to pick a team, he should at least only be given options for teams that make sense.

So should a player go to the team he played for the longest or the one he put up [marginally] better stats with? If Randy wants to be known for his time with the Yankees [which he won't] then they should let him. The real question is why do you think they should enshrine him as a D'back when he's most remembered for the majority of his career spent as a Mariner?

Its the MLB's Hall of Fame, they can do what they want. The players dont run the Hall of Fame, therefore they dont make the rules. Tell them to start there own, and maybe they will get to do the things they want to do.
