While all the talk has been about the new pitching, throwing and base running mechanics in MLB 2K8, it should not be lost in the discussions that the franchise mode also received a few tweaks that should make it a more enjoyable experience compared to last year. Most remember that 2K7's franchise was wrought with poor computer team management resulting in lineup glitches and an overabundance of player trades. 2K Sports being aware of this, implemented a few things that will give the user more control over the entire league. One of which added is the ability to edit all the computer controlled team's rosters which is part of the options in the franchise setup screen. While the option of assigning a maximum of four teams under user control remains the same as last year, you'll still have a little bit more flexibility to be able to correct what you deem the bad trades around the league and you'll be able to edit all the players in the league as you would your own team. The only thing I wasn't allowed to do in the preview build I have, is actually edit the cpu team's lineups. I had control of player movements such as releasing, re-signing, naming team captain, demoting/promoting, and trading over all the teams. I also noticed upon starting the franchise mode that I was immediately thrust into the role of a GM (the GM mode has been combined with the franchise mode this year instead of being separate). Hopefully when the final retail copies ship the ability to edit cpu team's lineups will also be an option.

Another thing added is an option that will also help curb the amount of trades you'll see involving the big name stars. You'll now have the choice of turning on or off a trade restriction that won't allow computer controlled teams to trade players rated 80 overall or above. Keep in mind whatever you choose pre-franchise, once you start you won't be able to change it without starting a completely new franchise. In our experimental franchise run we decided to keep it on and are happy to report that we didn't see guys like Jose Reyes or Alex Rodriguez changing addresses. While we still noticed a lot of trade activity throughout the league, it dealt with lower rated guys and no impact players.

There were also a couple of cool nuances added within the actual franchise itself. You'll now be able to control the rate at which your players progress/regress via franchise sliders. There are four sliders you'll be able to tweak of which control the hitter's rate of progression/regression and the pitcher's progression/regression. There's even a new screen that tracks your player's career progression which eliminates the guess work of wondering how much better or worse a particular player has gotten over his career.

With all these improvements we didn't even talk about the fully playable 90 authentic minor league teams added along with about 18 minor league stadiums. All of these additions should add up to a very pleasing year to run a franchise with your favorite club. Be sure to check back later this week as we offer a even more in-depth look at the franchise as we take a trial run with one of the MLB teams. Also check back every day for new content, videos and new screens including minor league footage.

Wow, they might have actually made this franchise better with some of the stuff that is actually helpful.

Now, whether it plays like baseball on the field is a whole 'nother thing.

I don't like the potential editor. Would feel like I am cheating if I tweak that. Hopefully you can either turn it off, or there is a default that is equal to past years.

Yeah, but it is a good thing if you feel the pro/regression is unrealistic as is in the game already (other gameplay aspects suffer from this as it is, thus requiring tweakage).

I like it, or at least the idea of it. We'll see how the implementation works.

I like the No computer trade over 80 option, because 2k7 would produce some ridiculous trades.

Yeah, I think I am more hyped about this than I was last year. With the Minors and the ability to edit computer trades, this will be cool

I like what I am hearing so far. I really like the potential editor and the no player with an 80 or above rating being traded. I will definitly be using both of those. I remember in 2k7 I had a franchise with the d-backs and finished year one. Chris Young hit .331, 34 HR's, and 21 SB's. I belive he was at a 76 and the very next season he went from a 76 to a 68 .

Another example is Matt Kemp hit like .320 with 21 HR's and went down like 5 ratings. Luckily now I can put an end to all of that.

I just really hope the final version of the game includes CPU lineup control. Doubt it though.
