Mark Prior's agent gives the Astros high marks in their pursuit of the righthander, but it's clear Houston will have to overcome some serious geography issues to beat out the San Diego Padres.

"The Astros have been very fair," Prior's agent, John Boggs, said via phone. "He'll really have to decide what's really the best place for him. He's trying to deliberate what direction he's going to go in."

Prior missed the 2007 season and is recovering from right shoulder surgery. On Thursday he was in Birmingham, Ala., doing what Boggs termed "another follow-up rehab." He has done most of his rehab in his native San Diego.

Prior, 27, was the second overall pick of the Chicago Cubs in the 2001 draft. When healthy, he has been considered one of the best young pitchers in baseball. He became a free agent after the Cubs declined to tender him a contract.

Boggs has made it clear to all the interested clubs that Prior is looking to sign only a one-year deal "because we feel very confident that after this year he'll be pretty sought-after in the free-agent market in '09."

The Astros also are trying to land righthander Kris Benson, who also is coming off shoulder surgery. Benson, who threw for scouts Monday, is on schedule to throw with all the pitchers at the start of spring training.

This could be huge news for the Stros.

Reds are looking pretty good. I guess they finnaly realized that pitching wins you games not the other way around.

If they land Bedard and Junior stays healthy again they'll win the Central IMO.

If they land Bedard they will become the team to beat in the Central. Good hitters, much improved pitching staff that is what wins you games.

The White Sox made an interesting move today, signing Cuban defector Alexei Ramirez to a four-year contract.

No idea. They also forgot they're not contending in the AL this year....

White Sox signed Cuban star Alexei Ramirez to a 4yr/4.75 Mil contract.

ORLANDO -- The Chicago White Sox and Cuban exile Alexei Ramírez have agreed to a four-year contract, pending a physical exam, according to a source who spoke to ESPNdeportes.com on condition of anonymity.

"Alexei got a good deal and he'll be looking for a starting roster spot during spring training with the White Sox," said the source. "He can play multiple positions, so his chances are good."

The financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Ramírez can play the outfield and some infield positions. He had collective workout sessions for scouts who work in the Dominican Republic. He also had individual sessions for the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, Oakland Athletics and the White Sox, the source said.

Ramírez was the home run leader in the Cuban baseball league last season, but he defected from the island and established residence in the Dominican Republic in November to try and make the jump to Major League Baseball.

Ramírez hit .332 with 87 home runs and 391 RBIs in seven seasons in Cuba with Pinar del Río. In 2006, he hit .335 with 68 RBIs and led the league with 20 homers.

 Awesome. He is promising, that's for sure. I don't expect him to be anything great, but hopefully above league average. The thing I like best about this is his versatility, and his pricetag. $1.2 mil a year is a steal for a player of his caliber. I like this low risk, good reward move.
