White Sox NOW officially signed Octavio Dotel to a 2 yr/$11M contract.

Again, I love the player, hate the money. 5.5 seems like WAYY to much for a releiver, and one who has been injured as well. If healthy, he will dominate.

Also, the Sox OFFICIALLY signed OF/IF Alexei Ramirez. They signed him for 4 years/4.75M. Now THIS is a great contract. He is a very talented player, at a VERY low cost. No risk here, huge reward. Combining the two deals made today, its a decent price at a little over 3M each. Of course, it dosen't work that way at all, but just thought I'd say it.

Santana offers diminishing
The Twins say they're not panicking while holding out for the best deal for Johan Santana. But word within baseball circles is that offers by the Yankees (no more Phil Hughes) and Red Sox are diminishing by the week. Best bet now for a trade of the two-time Cy Young Award winner appears to be with the Mets in a deal that would not include fast-rising hitter Fernando Martinez.

Info on Fatty Colon:

Baseball Prospectus

Monday’s Dominican League Finals game featured Bartolo Colon pitching for the Cibao Eagles against his Angels teammate, Ervin Santana. Since Colon’s probably the most prominent unsigned free agent remaining on the market (non-Barry Bonds division), there were likely a number of teams watching when he took the mound at Estadio Quisqueya.

So, how did big Bartolo do?

This wasn’t the power pitcher we’re used to seeing. Colon mainly threw two-seam fastballs in the 88-91 MPH range on the ESPN Deportes gun, touching 94 once in the fourth inning. Colon held Licey scoreless through four innings, retiring 11 in a row and 12 of his first 13 batters faced. The only hit he allowed to that point was a flare single. Despite the results, he hardly looked dominating. Both his strikeouts were called, and he wasn’t missing bats much. And in the fifth inning, Colon looked gassed–his fastball, after a velocity spike in the fourth, dropped into the mid-80s–and he was pulled after allowing two singles, a walk and a hit by pitch without retiring a batter. All four of those runners came around to score as Colon took the loss in Licey’s 5-1 victory.

The x-factor in any assessment of that performance is Colon’s conditioning. Colon, who’s always been more Chris Farley than Joe Piscopo, didn’t look any leaner than he was at the end of last season. He’s only made five starts in the month that he’s been with the Cibao team, contributing fewer than 20 total innings. So the question is, is this equivalent to where a pitcher would be a month into Spring Training, when he’s still working himself into big league form? Or is this what a major league team should expect from Colon from here on? It’s a question that could mean millions of dollars to Colon, and good number of teams to whichever team ultimately picks him up.

Is Chavez in Angels' future?
What are the chances of the Angels going after third baseman Eric Chavez? A healthy Chavez would seem to be a perfect fit for the Angels, a veteran who provides Gold Glove-caliber defense and legitimate power from the left side. But before the Angels even think about pursuing Chavez, they must be convinced he has fully recovered from three operations he had in the span of two months last fall. If Chavez returns to form, he could be a hot commodity on the trade market this summer, and the Angels could certainly make a run at him. Many general managers won't deal within their division, but I've talked to Oakland GM Billy Beane about this several times over the years, and he would not hesitate trading with the Angels if the deal was right.

According to some Rumors, there is a good chance Crede will be traded to the Giants. They have no interest in keeping Pedro Feliz around, and former White Sox employee who now works for the Giants is actively trying to convice the Giants to trade for him. The source indicated that the Giants are also appearantly shopping Matt Cain, but there is no chance that Crede will get Cain in return, but Crede to the Giants seems plausable.

Heard on the radio that the Yankees and Robinson Cano are close to agreeing to a 4-year, $30 million contract that may or may not eventually include two option years.

Braves sign Soriano to a two year, $9 million deal...

Quote:

Not content just to avoid arbitration with closer Rafael Soriano, the Braves signed him to a two-year, $9 million contract Thursday that bought out his first year of free agency.

We overpaid for him, especially for next year. I don't see him getting that much in the open market, but who knows, seeing as overpaying for relievers seems to be the thing for stupid GMs now. We could have probably found somebody as good for less amount of money next year. I don't like what Frank Wren is doing so far. -_-
