Braves sign Soriano to a two year, $9 million deal...

Not content just to avoid arbitration with closer Rafael Soriano, the Braves signed him to a two-year, $9 million contract Thursday that bought out his first year of free agency.

We overpaid for him, especially for next year. I don't see him getting that much in the open market, but who knows, seeing as overpaying for relievers seems to be the thing for stupid GMs now. We could have probably found somebody as good for less amount of money next year. I don't like what Frank Wren is doing so far. -_-

I think it's a good signing, he's gonna be a really good closer someday, maybe even this year. He's already one of the better setup guys in the league, his slider is deadly.

I mean in his first year in the NL he set career highs in K's (70), IP's (72), WHIP (0.86) and Games (71). The only thing that is scary is his elbow.

That Horacio Ramirez for Rafael Soriano trade has been dubbed by many as the worst trade in Seattle Mariner history.

That's the thing. I don't think he'll be able to hold up. His BABIP was .208 last year, which does seem to explain the low WHIP.

He was terrible for a stretch(June and July to be more specific), and like I said, I don't see him holding up a whole year, much less him becoming one of the best closers in the majors.

Yeah, his one downfall in Seattle was his tendency to be streaky at times, which is not good for a closer obviously. I don't think anyone should say Soriano will be one of the best closers in the majors anytime soon, he'll be good IMO, but not among the best. I'd say he'll be like a modern day Jose Mesa. Reliable, yet streaky at times.

He does have amazing talent and potential though once the kinks get worked out. I still think it's a great signing for Atlanta.

The Yankees and second baseman Robinson Canó reached a preliminary agreement Friday on a contract that could pay him about $55 million over six years.

Report: Twins lock up Morneau for 6 yr/$80

Quote:

The deal with Morneau, which comes just a week after the two sides agreed to a one-year, $7.4 million contract, is for a reported six years and $80 million. If signed, it would represent both the longest contract in Twins history, as well as the richest, in terms of overall money, the newspaper reported.

I got Alicia Sacramone

There are reportedly talks now that if the Bedard deal gets done, the O's will trade Roberts to the Cubs for Sean Gallagher and Felix Pie.

Sox/Sox trade today.

White traded RP David Aardsma to the Red for A pitchers Willy Mota and Miguel Socolovich.

Mota seems like a decent arm. He is a converted outfielder who found success as a pitcher (opposite the Ankiel experiment).

Quote:

Mota, 22, went 5-3 with a 2.60 ERA (8 ER/27.2 IP) and 22 strikeouts in 17 relief appearances with Advanced Rookie Lowell in 2007, his first season as a pitcher. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic limited opponents to a .225 (23-102) average and averaged 7.2 strikeouts per 9.0 IP.

Socolovich is struggling at A-ball. Probably never going to make AAA with his numbers.

Aardsma had a great early season in 2007, because being terrible the rest of the year. 6.40 ERA on the season.

Quote:

Aardsma, 26, was designated for assignment by the White Sox on January 22. He split the 2007 season between the White Sox and Class AAA Charlotte, going 2-1 with a 6.40 ERA (23 ER/32.1 IP) and 36 strikeouts in 25 relief appearances with the Sox.

BDM, any insight on Mota? He seems like a decent prospect.

He's an OF turned pitcher. He's a dirty minority(really dirty).

Last year, in his first year as a pitcher(A) he had a 7.16 K9 and a 4.88 BB9. He seems like a raw, wild pitcher. He's more of a thrower, and I don't think he's close tp realizing his potential as a pitcher.
