Nice to know that you are the one to determine if golf is a sport of not... :sarcasm: Golf may not be popular like basketball or football but it's still a sport. Also it is a lot harder than it looks. And also it's Tiger not Tigro

So now you have to be athletic for something to be determined a sport? *see Shaun Rodgers* |

The man who will come into a thread with a completely random point is questioning my use of Shaun Rodgers. Seriously though, try golf. Try it. Once you do that, then you can talk. It's a helluva lot more than just swinging a stick. May not look that difficult on TV, but like I said, try it. |

It's golf club not golf stick...yeah anyone can swing a golf club...but hitting a small white ball and making sure it goes where you want it to is easier said than done. Plus hitting the ball with strong wind makes it even harder... |

Golf is very, very demanding. I've only played a couple of times, and each time I came away with more respect for those who play it professionally. Also, the game is more mental than anything. The biggest part of passing Q-school is not the physical part, but the mental part. I've spoken with several guys playing professionally and they all say the same thing: it's not the swinging or physical talent that separates the good from the best (or even those on tour versus amateurs); it's the stuff between the ears. |

Care to elaborate? I've never played a round of golf or anything (just hit the driving range once or twice) so I dunno anything about golf. But I can tell you that hitting the ball a good distance is pretty easy. It's not physically demanding at all and after a few hours of hitting off a tee, a good drive shouldn't require much effort. I know nothing about hitting off the rough or out of a bunker... I'm sure that's a lot harder than hitting off a tee but there still isn't a whole lot of athleticism needed. I'm assuming that all pros can hit the ball 300+ and putt from 20ft away so I've always attributed the "skill" difference to the type of equipment or to the pre-match preparation. The only mental part of golf that I could imagine is the scouting of the course prior to playing on it. I find it funny that golfers need absolute quiet when teeing off or putting. You probably shouldn't be pro if you can't handle a little noise/ heckling. |

Sure. As for the quiet, you have to remember, this game originated as a gentlemen's sport. It's a courtesy and has been carried through to today's game. For the mental part, it's less about scouting the course and more about blocking the pressures and other factors. Beleive it or not, there is a tremendous amount of thought that goes into each stroke. Hitting off a tee is very easy. I said the same thing you did when I tried it, "Hey, this is easy." Then I played an actual 18-hole course. During the summer. It's rough. And I wasn't playing on TV for a million dollars and a sponsorship deal. Sure, the pros get good equipment. But they don't start like that. Like I said, each stroke has a mental aspect that goes along with it: what kind of lie do I have (in the rough, fairway, bunker, light/heavy rough, etc...)? Where do I want to hit the ball (where are you aiming)? How do I get the ball there? Are there any obstacles (people, trees, bunkers, etc...) between me and my target? Do I want to use draw or fade? How much? Backspin or forespin? How much? All that and more goes into each swing. A lot more than you think when you're shooting free throws. By the end of the day my first excursion my body was beat. I felt like I played three baseball games. And I had a golf cart between holes. It's a rough sport and I certainly have respect for anyone that plays it professionally. |
