I was just looking at the members list and there were a bunch that were "validating."

It's cool to get new members, but most of these were weird names that made no sense. To be honest, they looked like the email addresses that receive spam regarding the girth of my genitals and my 10 million Yen account that is frozen in Zaire that the prince of Congo will release for me if I just send him all my personal information and account numbers.

Anyway, I guess my point is that I'm wondering if these are real people or just bots that are randomly signing up. If they are bots, does that leave us in the possible situation we were in before when we were hacked?

There was a time a couple months back where this guy was spamming our boards. He got banned and he threatened to come back so we put the validating members thing on. I'm assuming the accounts you are inquiring about were ones that he made in an attempt to spam the site.

Sorry, for the extremely late response. I was just clearing the solved threads and moving them into the Solved Issues Sub-Forum and realized this had gone unanswered.

The members validating with the crazy names are the robots. EViL2uCe clears them off the member list once in awhile. They are randomly signing up. However, they can't become a registered member because of our "bot test" when you attempt to register. So they're just left Validating with no member rights.

No, this does not leave us in a situation where we could potentially be hacked once again. The mission of these robots is just to advertise their company's product, which many times they can't do because of the "bot test" when you register.

And Lakers, no, he wasn't referring to those. Those were taken care of and are banned.

I may come off as stupid here but I have no idea what the concept behind these bots you speak of. I would like to know exactly what they are if someone would like to explain...

They're a computer program or system that usually signs up random accounts at forums, emails and various other places for advertising or more sinister goals.

They're the ones that sign up at 2k and offer a new Nokia phone or to win an iPod or whatever, if that helps.

So what happened to this? Why are we getting spam bots signing up now?

Because we're in the google thing. They were signing up before; the Admins just kept deleting them (it was set to Admin Validation). Today, it got set at E-Mail Validation because we'd have to delete dozens a day. If you ever see a spammer here, it's a human promoting their site not a bot, I'm pretty sure.

But what if a real member joins and you block them?

It wouldn't matter anymore because it's on E-Mail validation.

Before, when it was on Admin validation, all the spammers would have random generated names, have .cn in their e-mail address, or both. What you speak of definitely could've happened, but I hope it didn't. I always looked hard to make sure.
