Who would you say is the best shortstop in the NL East. Who do you think will have the best year in 2008. The obvious candidates are Jimmy Rollins, Jose Reyes, and Hanley Ramirez. Break it down for fielding, hitting, and baserunning. |

Fielding: 1. Jose Reyes 2. Jimmy Rollins 3. Hanley Ramirez, Jose Reyes has a cannon arm and he is accurate, the best arm for a shrortstop in the MLB. He can make some plays easily that other guys seem to make look impossible. I also think he is the most athletic one out of them. That helps with leaping and diving plays Hitting: 1. Hanley Ramirez 2. Jimmy Rollins 3. Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez has shone in his years that he is a very talented hitter. 332 average, 29 homers, 81 RBI, 562 slugging, 386 OBP. Baserunning: 1. Jose Reyes 2. Jimmy Rollins 3. Hanley Ramirez, this is an easy one. 78 stolen bases last year, he is the fastest of all of them. A player like this can make groundouts into hits. Rollins very close, takes Reyes in 3B's and runs. |

I take Hanley Ramirez. While Jose Reyes is the best basestealer in Baseball, the difference baserunning makes in a season is miniscule to the difference power makes in a season. I remember UP debating this with me on AIM one time, and we both agreed that Ramirez is going to develop far more power over time. Hanley already has a lot more power as it is, and he has more potential to continue to develop it. Presently, the Fielding evens the scale a little bit but not enough to justify Reyes. Hanley is better now and will progress more than Reyes as time elipses. |
