Ah, yes. Buildings are something I've always been fascinated by (look at my profile). Where better to go for these than Chicago? Well, nowhere now, but Dubai will soon take over dropping Chicago to the 2nd tallest city in the world. I know all about the Chicago Spire. They started building it last summer and it will be finished by 2011. It is going to be a massive 2,000 feet. To put that in context, the Sears Tower 1,730 feet INCLUDING THE ANTENNA. That stands as the world's tallest building currently. Empire State Building is 9th actually, but they included it on the diagram because it's obviously more well known than the buildings outside the Top-3. New York has the Freedom Tower coming to replace the Twin Towers at a whooping 1,776 feet. Now, think where that number "1776" came from and why we are even building it in the first place.;) Right now, Chicago has 3 of the tallest 5 buildings in the US (John Hancock and AON Center) and 4 of the Top 10 (AT&T). And you have a lot taller buildings on the way paving the way for more beautiful skylines in the US. New York has all the WTC Towers coming and Chicago has the Spire, Trump (still hate him), Waterview, Legacy, and Aqua to be completed within the next 5 years. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised if 1-2 of these skyscrapers were destroyed. :( Another commonly overlooked structure is the CN Tower in Toronto. |

One thing I was going to say in my first post but forgot to was has anyone ever heard of the tower in North Korea? It is as tall as the John Hancock BUT the North Korean government keeps it secret and crops it out of EVERY SINGLE official picture of the city. They are embarrased because the building was never completed in the late 80s/early90s as scheduled. They even put 2% of their nation's income into building it. Whether it was due to structural or financial complication or whatever, we'll never know because the North Korean government won't tell anyone (and probably never will). They completely pretend it doesn't exist. |

Yeah, it's the Ryugyong Hotel. Still not finished, no windows or people living in it. It was started in 1987. ![]() They are just letting it crumble. Like you mentioned, they don't have the money or resources to finish the tower. |
