He is probably meaning to say it's such a great country and the greatest country ever, but it still has flaws and I need to change these flaws (which will be hard because its the greatest nation.) Now if he said "Let's try to change THAT", then that would be a different story. |

'My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you'll join with me as we try to make it better.' That sounds better, doesn't it? |

Well, if George Bush had said this, people would be all over it and be calling him an idiot. I know what Obama was saying, but it's only fair that he get called out when he says something like that, too. |

Even the greatest nations need change... obviously I am referring to change for the better. Not that I am agreeing that America is the greatest nation in the history of the world (because it definitely is not), but there is always room for improvement no matter how great something is. I think that's what he was alluding to. I don't really care either way but I just don't like when people make it their mission to misconstrue and twist what other people say. And I disagree with the notion that George Bush would get bashed anymore than Obama if he made a similar comment(assuming they were in similar positions). Bush says some stupid things and gets bashed for it; Obama said something that makes sense but was misinterpreted (or twisted) by some. Bush might get attacked a bit more only because he is the president and not because of who he is aside from that. |

It can be interpreted so many different ways. We're called by many "The Greatest Nation", but those of us who live here have our doubts. He wants to change those doubts. Simply put, he wants to change the way that the US is viewed and ran, obviously. |

Lakes, Bush gets "attacked" all the time. And he was when he ran, too. It is the same thing, and yes, it was missinterpreted, but it was also mis-spoke. He worded what he was trying to say poorly. Same thing happens to all politicians, though. |
