Alright. New topic: Two teams that were projected to make a run late into October, the Tigers and Yankees, have struggled to begin the season. Which one is going to come back and make a playoff run? Yankees? Tigers? Both? Neither? Why or why not? Edited by sportslover, Tue Jun 3, 2008 5:29 pm.

Okay, here are the 4 topics. Answer quickly and post your answers in this thread: #1: Who is more likely to win their division, Rays or Marlins? #2: If you could sign one pitcher and one batter under the age of 22 to start a franchise with, who would you choose and why? (They must be in the pros right now.) #3: The Cincinnati Reds last winter traded Josh Hamilton (AL POTM April & May, MLB Leader in RBI's) to the Texas Rangers for Edinson Volquez (7-2 Record, MLB Leader in K's & ERA) Both teams are near .500, Texas 29-29 and Cincy 28-29. So, who won or in the long run will win the trade? #4: Two teams that were projected to make a run late into October, the Tigers and Yankees, have struggled to begin the season. Which one is going to come back and make a playoff run? Yankees? Tigers? Both? Neither? Why or why not? Edited by sportslover, Tue Jun 3, 2008 5:32 pm.

Lol. Sorta like when we had ATH. Everyone said they wanted to do it, but when the time came to actually do it, people bailed. Good effort though... Edited by LAL, Wed Jun 4, 2008 5:10 pm.

1. The Marlins have the best shot to win their division. The Rays have more competition in their division than the Marlins. The Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Yankees are all good teams, and better than the Marlins competition. The Marlins have a good Phillies in their division, a lost Mets team, and an under-performing Braves team. The Rays have better pitching than the Marlins, but the Marlins lineup is very strong. Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla, Mike Jacobs, and Josh Willingham are my lovers. 2. Easy Clayton Kershaw. He has been dominant in his first couple starts. His K/9 was great in the minors, and with a fastball clocking at 95 and a great hook, he is the next great Dodgers pitcher. 3. They both win the trade, but if I had to choose one it would be Volquez. Josh Hamilton is a older than Edision so Edision has more years ahead of Josh so that is the only reason Volquez would be higher. However, I would do the trade for both teams again if they had a shot. 4. Neither. The are both plagued with the same curse, no starting pitching. The Yankees have Wang and the Tigers have Gallaraga. Joba is supposed to be the answer for the Yankees, but is going to have a learning curve for Joba at the starting spot. The Tigers have no hope. Was the quick enough? |

1. I don't think either team will end up in 1st, but I think the Rays have a better shot than the Marlins to compete (at least in the wild card) just due to the fact that they're more built to sustain success. The Marlins are in the bottom third of the league in OBP (20th) and walks (26th), as opposed to the Rays who are in the top-half of the league for both (12th in OBP, 14th in walks). A lot of the Marlins' key performers are also fluky so far this year (Dan Uggla has a BABIP of .351 with a ratio of 22.5% of HR/FB, which is nearly 10% more than his career average before this year and Josh Willingham has a BABIP of .362 and a HR/FB% of 22.2%, both significantly higher than his career averages. Also, the Rays have more of a sustained pitching staff. I'd definitely take Scott Kazmir, James Shields, Matt Garza, Edwin Jackson, and Andy Sonnastine over Scott "Fluke" Olsen, Ricky Nolasco, Mark Hendrickson, Andrew Miller, and Burke Badenhop. 2. For a pitcher, I'd take Clayton Kershaw. He has great stuff, and, although he's struggled a bit with control, he started to improve it in AA this year. He's already striking out more than 8 batters per nine innings at 20 years old, which is just a testament to how talented of a pitcher he is. The hitter I'd take is Jay Bruce. It's a small sample size, but he's been amazing so far for the Reds with a line of .485/.585/.848. He's the total package for any hitter with great contact, power, and discipline, in addition to having decent speed and being a decent fielder in center. 3. I think as long as Dusty Baker doesn't overwork Volquez the Reds will end up winning this trade. Volquez has been inhumanely great this year with nearly 11 K/9, a 1.32 ERA, a 335 ERA+, and .36 HR/9, all while playing half of his games at GAB. Hamilton is a good hitter and will end his career with a few All-Star appearances, but that's nothing compared to what Volquez has showed so far this year. 4. The Tigers have more of a hope due to the division they play in. Although they're farther behind at the moment, Chicago, Minnesota, and Cleveland will prove to be easier to pass than Boston, Tampa, and Toronto. The Tigers' pitching has been horrible, but if Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney can manage not not get hurt again, the team still has a little hope that they can turn it around. Once Verlander, Granderson, Renteria, and Sheffield (when he comes back from the DL) start playing to their ability, they should turn it around a little. |
