I want to see everyone's list for Top Ten Defenses, and hopefully we could start a discussion.

Here would be my list:

1. Anaheim
2. Detroit
3. Dallas
4. Calgary
5. Vancouver
6. Philadelphia
7. Florida
8. Nashville
9. Chicago
10. Minnesota

I don't know if I could say a top 10, but I think Detroit is number 1. Anaheim is just a bit too old for my likings, though I agree Pronger/Niedermeyer is hard to go against.

The first four teams that came to mind when I saw this thread were:

Detroit
Dallas
Calgary
Anaheim

I thought of them in that order, dunno why. Thought I'd share that because it was interesting that Chill came up with the same top four as I did, just in a different order.

1. Detroit

I put the Red Wings first because I think they are right behind Anaheim defensively, but the tremendous puckhandling, puck moving and skating ability of the Defense as a whole puts them over the top for me.

2. Anaheim

Best Defensive defense. Age is a factor as mentioned so they could regress in the future and they don't do the above things as well as Detroit. Still a very close call.

3. Dallas

Just needs to remain healthy. What started out as a day-to-day foot injury for Zubov turned into missing the last 33 games and first round of the playoffs.

4. Vancouver

Maybe the best at developing Defensemen. Also gets the best value for the cap room put in for the Defense. You would think with all the available cap room, they would be able to put out a competitive offense. Apparently not.

5. Calgary

Phaneuf is a bit overrated, but he's still a Top-10 Defenseman. Aucoin had a turnaround year. Regehr has top line ability. Very physical, tough, big, smart defense.

6. San Jose

They were around here last year. Defense will look different next year so it will be interesting to see how they respond.

7. Chicago

Already an up-and-coming Defense just got significantly better by adding one of the best puck moving Defensemen, Brian Campbell.

8. Florida

Defense hid a lot of their problems last year and added depth with their recent acquisitions.

9. New York

Talent may not be Top Ten and there is no shutdown Defenseman, but this squad overacheived last season on the ice.

10. New Jersey

May be biased here, but this Defense was one of the best in GA. Lou will most likely upgrade by the end of the FA Period.

No idea after that. Have to put Wings and Stars at the top though.:)

Glad someone said Florida. They're young defenseman have matured since I first saw several of them in '05 as compared to when I watched them during the Wings-Panthers game this past season. They just added depth, and I think that defense will prove to be much more challenging than I think a lot of people will guess.

Now if that offense can learn to keep the puck.

So long, and thanks for all the fish...

Caps D is nowhere near top-10 right now, but I'm saying, in a couple years, Green and Schultz could be a pretty good combo.

See, I would place the Ducks over the Wings. Here are my reasons listed in no order of importance.

1. The Ducks turnover the puck less then the Wings.
2. The Ducks are a better decision making group then the Wings.
3. The Ducks bring a much better intimidation element then the Wings.
4. The Ducks defense is much more physical then the Wings.

I thought they were borderline Top Ten last year as well. In spite of holes in the net, they allowed the least amount of goals of any Eastern Conference team to not make the Playoffs. Their acquisitions this year should bring awareness to their Defense, and finally be recognized as the Top Ten Defense they are.

I agree, but as of the moment they probably shouldn't be paired together. I would think the Capitals would go with Morrison-Green and Schultz-Poti to start off the season since they showed chemistry on the ice that made their respectable Defense at the end of last season.
