I don't break character until after the DVD commentary

St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - The Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings will play at Wrigley Field on New Year's Day in the league's second outdoor Winter Classic.

According to the report, the game was finally approved last week when NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman met with the Hawks, Cubs and Mayor Richard Daley.

The NHL has said that an official announcement likely won't be made until closer to the time the 2008-09 season schedule is released, likely in mid-July.

However, the report states that an announcement is expected next week before the inaugural "Blackhawks Convention" at the Chicago Hilton.

Last New Year's Day, Sidney Crosby scored on the final chance of the shootout to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres in the first NHL game played outdoors in the United States.

The game was played before an NHL-record crowd of 71,217 at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York -- home of the NFL's Buffalo Bills.

I wonder what kind of set up they will have because Wrigley Field doesn't have the seating infrastructure to watch a Hockey game like Ralph Wilson Stadium.

I was holding out hope for Yankee Stadium but knew it would be unlikely as the Yankees wouldn't agree to have the last event there a Hockey game. Then there are the fees the Rangers would have had to pay.

That is going to be sick. One of the best rivalries at the best stadium. I can't imagine the scoreboard being there in the snow for a hockey game. Or even the ivy. lol It's probably dead in the winter though.

I went to the game last year. It was a blizzard and there were many stoppages that wouldn't normally take place. Still a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The Canadiens are allegedly trying to set something up at their CFL venue to celebrate their 100th Anniversary. We potentially could be seeing 2 this year although the Canadiens game likely will not be televised in the States knowing Buttman.
