Good on Jason Bay getting a shot at the playoffs. A rejuvenated Manny in Florida could be huge for them. I really hope they make the playoffs now. |

Peter Gammons is reporting that the Red Sox are asking for so much that this deal is not going to get done. And if anyone would know, it'd be Boston's 10th man. Apparently the Marlins are offering so little and asking for a lot in return as well because they know Boston is kinda getting held hostage. The Sox have no idea if Manny is going to play hard the rest of the year or is he going to just shut things down. They're desperate to get rid of him, but it doesn't look like this is going to happen. |

LOL. Peter Gammons was really steamed about the whole Manny situation on BBTN a couple of nights ago, and he was acting as if he were having a panic attack (from what I hear -- I didn't watch it) |

Those are his boys! Seriously, he's awesome at his job (one of the best ever -- he changed baseball coverage in newspapers), but he's one of the biggest homers ever. |

The LaRoche brothers are on the same team now. But what are the Dodgers going to do with 5 OF's? Just flat out bench Pierre and Jones? A lot of money for back ups. |

Without looking at the prospects Boston gave up, because we're not sure who they actually are -- this is a good deal for Boston. Believe it or not, once you take defensse into account: Bay ------> Manny I have Bay as a true talent .373 wOBA, which is basically a 2 wins above average hitter, while Manny is a 2.7 wins above average hitter. Defense is what makes the difference here though: Manny is basically a -1.5 wins below average with his defense, and that might be generous, while Bay is basically an average left fielder. I didn't give him anything, though I could have given him +.3 for defense. Essentially, Manny is a a 3.1 WAR player per 162, while Bay is a 3.5 WAR player per 162. The Red Sox are getting better at the major league level. Jason Bay is worth around $15.4 mil, which is $5.1 the rest of the way, and he'll be getting paid $1.9 mil prorated the rest of the way. That's $3.2 mil in equity that the Red Sox are making there. As for the Dodgers, Manny is worth around $13.6 mil the rest of the way, which is $4.5 mil the rest of the way, and he's making $6.6 mil the rest of the way. The Dodgers, and Mr. Genius Ned Colleti, lose about $1.1 mil in equity for the rest of the season. Both players improve both teams chances of getting to the playoffs, so you'd also have to look at how this moves them in reference to the win curve, and how this improves their chances. Someone else can do that. The prospects also have monetary value, and someone else can do that. I'm too lazy. Just by Manny for Bay, the Red Sox win. Obviously, there are still the prospects at hand. I would have gone |

Well I'm not as optimistic as you are about the trade, SL. Bay's career numbers against the American League are nothing to be wild about. I would much rather have had the Red Sox deal with Manny for another two months, get their two picks and go after Adam Dunn or Pat Burrell. |
