I assume he will play some DH (yes i know Thomes plays DH).
Good move by the Sox even though they dont really need an outfielder. How is this a good move?
Griffey is a total butcher in the OF (possibly the worst defensive OF in baseball after Manny), and offensively he's been very unimpressive now (.348, .320, and .312 park adjusted wOBAs the past 3 seasons). I have him as a true talent .331 wOBA hitter (the league average is .338). He can't field and he can't hit enough to be a DH.
I have him as a true talent -.6 win above replacement player given his playing time (or a -.3 WAR per 162 games); that is, he is basically half a win worse than a replacement level player (a guy you can sign for the league minimum, or a guy that you can freely find on the market anyt time).
Meanwhile, I have Konerko as a true talent .342 wOBA hitter, and he's pretty average defensively. That would make him a 1.5 WAR player, or a 1.7 WAR hitter. That's below average, and nothing too great but better than Griffey. The White Sox and their fans are just too jumpy about Konerko.
Reds fans should rejoice that they got something at least kind of valuable in return for him. And if the White Sox have to pay his pro rated contract, it's so much better.

i just woke up and found out about this.im furious because i have heard nothing but we are going to build our outfield around Griffey Bruce and Dunn thanks for the fucking lie reds management you stupid fucks.
Why would Griffey be in that discussion. You'd have to be an idiot to believe a team would want to build around Griffey in the outfield at this stage in his career. At least they got something for him. sports is all i have since i lost my dad at an early age of 22.so it just irratates me to no end with this team and the Bengals im tired of the losing thats all.i so don't wanna be a bandwagoner and hop on another team but im so close now thats for sure.the losing is just frustrating to deal with now being that your a yankee fan you wouldn't know what thats like.

Well, keeping Griffey isn't going to make you lose any less. Exactly. And wasn't Masset a prospect? Or Richar? I forget. Plus they're 13.5 games back. Griffey wasn't going to help them erase that deficit.

After I found out the details of the trade, I am 1000X more happy about this deal. I figured we were giving up Fields, Broadway, Poreda, Getz, Richard, or a minor leaguer that was actually valuable to us. Richar has been injuried and can't even hack in in AAA, and Masset is terrible.
I really dont think we need Griffey, but the fact that we gave up NO ONE and I also heard that Cinci is paying the remainder of Griffey's contract, I am happy. Its a no-risk, medium reward deal. He can only hurt us in the field, but will help out the hitting and fanbase.

And the two teams are splitting the remainder of the contract, along with the $4 mil buyout.
You did give up someone, which is more than you should give up for someone of Griffey's talent level.
Griffey is a replacement level player. Those types of players warrant the league minimum, which is $400 k. Meanwhile you'll be paying him 1/2 of 1/3 of $12.5 mil, which is $2, along with $2 next year, and you're getting nothing from him next season. The White Sox are losing $3,600,000 in equity right there.
The Reds gain $4 mil which they would have had to pay Griffey, along with say $10 million for both prospects (say they're each worth $5 mil during their time with the Reds, which is a solid estimate considering Law sees Richar as a utility player and Masset as a reliever). That's about $12 million dollars they gain on the trade, considering they'll have to pay the two prospects very little money for the next +6 years.

Well, keeping Griffey isn't going to make you lose any less. i know what your saying but i just also found out.i guess we got a 2nd baseman in the deal and as long as we have brandon phillips he will never get any playing time.im still a little upset over the trade but i will deal with it just like in the past when the reds made stupid trades before.

This isn't even close to being a stupid trade. They got something valuable back for someone who should have no surplus value.

He will help our hitting because Griffey>>Konerko. That is not true. When you consider true talent, Konerko has a better projected (projections -- which are a measure of true talent)wOBA than Griffey. That's not even considering the amount of runs Griffey is going to cost Chicago.
This is a stupid deal by the Sox.
