A Division contender all of last year, the Padres finished with the 4th best record in the League and missed the Playoffs on a blown save in Denver in a play-in game. This season, San Diego could end up losing 100 games. I don't think I have gotten to watch San Diego more than once this season. I don't recall them losing any key players in the offseason. So what happened? Are they really as bad as their record indicates? |

Their Defense is the worst I've seen from teams we have played. It's kind of funny to watch them because they seem to come up with new, creative ways to lose every game. Injuries have hurt them, but there are a lot of other teams plagued by them too. With all this said, they swept us.

Their pitching, which was one of their biggest strengths in previous years, has not been very good at all. Their +ERA went from 108 to 90 from 2007 to 2008. And then they had guys like Khalil Greene just suck... |

The sad part with this organization is I think they've just begun their dark days. It remains to be settled in the offseason, but the ownership is up in the air and not for the good. John Moores is going through divorce proceedings, and it his ex-mistress may end up gaining control of the team. Unless she's the next Marge Schoot for you old timers, San Diego will be a sad Baseball town. |

They still have one of the brightest organizations in baseball with KT and Depo, so I wouldn't say they are completely hopeless. As a Pad fan, I'd be semi-confident that the FO will be able to do something during the off-season. With that being said, as an organization, they are not very deep in terms of talent. |

I'll add that years of substandard drafting and development contributed to this season. Having the #1 pick in 2004 and ending up with Matt Bush instead of Jered Weaver, Stephen Drew, or Justin Verlander certainly hurts--the Padres passed up those three all because of money concerns. They also had some players that played well last year that completely fizzled this season. Adrian Gonzalez is a beast though. |

Can't really disagree with anything said here. Probably a combination of all those big factors. Some of them are evident here in Washington. San Diego will probably have one of the biggest drop offs of all-time. Potentially a -27. |

Their bullpen blows a lot more than last year too. |

Towers has won the National League West Division 40% of the years he's been GM. I'll bet he gets the team back to competitiveness. |
