I'd go with Justin Morneau like M's he has been on fire this year, and since nobody is really running away with it this year he has a pretty good chance. .311 /.383 /.519/ .902 .311 45doubles, 23homers, 128rbis and his team still has a chance to make the playoffs |

Yes. Because he kicks ass. If it's going to be a Twin, then it HAS to be Joe Mauer. And I'd say Justin Morneau is one of the most overrated players in baseball, especially by his own team. People fail to realize that he's just not that good defensively and that his hitting is not that impressive for a 1B. |

LOL, no. He has the third best fielding percentage for first basemen in the AL this year: http://hosted.stats.com/mlb/getleaders.asp?rank=159&btnGo=Go He's 6th in runs created in the AL: http://hosted.stats.com/mlb/getleaders.asp?rank=070&btnGo=Go 4th in extra base hits in the AL: http://hosted.stats.com/mlb/getleaders.asp?rank=011&btnGo=Go And, he's 4th in average with RISP in the AL: http://hosted.stats.com/mlb/getleaders.asp?rank=054&btnGo=Go You've said some funny stuff before (as have I), but overrated? Wow. Without him the Twins would not be as good as they are. I look forward to hearing your reasoning behind him being overrated with a bat.
Also, Morneau not even in the top ten? If you're gonna add a player from the O's on that list, I'd easily put Huff before Marakis. Edited by Mariners in 2009, Fri Sep 19, 2008 6:40 pm.

Huff is a DH, which brings his value down. |

Joe Mauer, as a catcher, has a .387 wOBA compared to Morneau's .386. As a catcher, that is. And a good defensive one, that is. Meanwhile, Morneau has been terrible defensively this season. Via The Hardball Time's fielding statistics, he's been 2 wins worst than the average defensive 1B. How does that translate to WAR? This season, Morneau has been a 2.3 wins above replacement player, which is .3 wins above AVERAGE. Meanwhile, Mauer has been a 5 WAR player. Not only is Mauer just as good offensively, but he's superior defensively and HE'S A CATCHER. Why is he overrated? Simple. Half of his career he's been pretty shitty offensively for a 1B, while being average to below average defensively. You can't tell me with a straight face that you're certain he's a true talent great hitter. Edited by sportslover, Fri Sep 19, 2008 10:54 pm.

I don't see how in 2006 and 2008 he's been below average offensively? Maybe prior to 2006, but this year and in his MVP year in my eyes he had solid seasons at the plate. I know his defense is nothing special, but he isn't horrible. 995 in 2006, 996 last year and a 997 so far. There's worse. And, I wasn't saying no to Mauer getting MVP votes, shouldn't have put that in the quote, Mauer is having a good year and will get his first Gold Glove this season along with a Silver Slugger. I was saying no to you saying Morneau is overrated. At least IMO. Two of the top ten most underrated superstar-caliber players in my eyes are in Minnesota, Joe Nathan and Justin Morneau.
Also, what is WAR? Don't think I've heard of that, or just not in abbreviated form. |
