Yesterday the M's hired their new GM. Jack Zduriencik (Zur-in-sek), he is 57 and has been the scouting director for the Brewers for the last nine years.

Quote:

Zduriencik was one of four finalists to replace Bill Bavasi, who was fired in June, and interim GM Lee Pelekoudas. The others were Los Angeles Dodgers assistant GM Kim Ng, Arizona Diamondbacks executive Jerry DiPoto and Toronto Blue Jays assistant GM Tony LaCava.

From USS Mariner:

The M’s have chosen Jack Zduriencik as their new GM. Despite the fact that he’s the oldest of the candidates interviewed and comes with a scouting background, do not assume that this is just more of the same. Zduriencik has been the best regarded scouting director in baseball for the last few years, and the work he did in building the Brewers through the draft was legendary. If you want to know why the Brewers were in the playoffs this year, it’s because Zduriencik hit home run after home run in the draft. This is a good hire.

Now, Jack Z isn’t exactly the new school analytical type we were all hoping for. His strengths are all scouting based, and he won’t be the kind of guy to come in and turn the Mariners into the next Oakland/Cleveland/Boston/Tampa Bay. With Engle, Fontaine, and now Zduriencik, the Mariners are clearly going to try to win with the Atlanta/Minnesota/Anaheim method of just outscouting everyone else on earth and developing so much good talent from within that they can’t help but be competitive.

If they want to be a great team, they should not stop with Z, but hire a strong analytical department to supplement the scouting strength at the top of the front office. The two can work together, but there has to be a real effort on the M’s part here.

Also, some of his accomplishments:

Milwaukee Brewers
10/25/99—10/21/08: Scouting Director (in charge of both amateur and international)
Notable draft picks: Corey Hart, J.J. Hardy, Manny Parra, Prince Fielder, Dana Eveland, Rickie Weeks, Tony Gwynn Jr., Yovani Gallardo, Angel Salome, Lorenzo Cain, Ryan Braun

>First non-GM to be named Executive of the Year by Baseball America.

The M's gave him full control of the team to turn things around. His first tasks are to find a new manager, Ned Yost is the early favorite due to Milwaukee connections and then to do something with Raul Ibanez while he still has somewhat of a high stock.

Seattle is going to start interviewing for a new manager today, the 7 candidates:

- Joey Cora, White Sox bench coach
- Chip Hale, Diamondbacks third base coach
- DeMarlo Hale, Red Sox third base coach
- Brad Mills, Red Sox bench coach
- Jose Oquendo, Cardinals third base coach
- Don Wakamatsu, A’s bench coach
- Randy Ready, AAA Portland Beavers manager

Seems Ned Yost, Jim Riggleman and Willie Randolph won't be offered the job. It wouldn't surprise me to see Joey Cora get it, he is a huge fan favorite.

Being from Portland and watching AAA games on the side, I'm pulling for Randy Ready, he has knowledge and the personality to take on a team like the M's. He knows how to win as well, he was manager of the year in a rookie league in 2002 and 2003 and won an AA title in 2007. I think he is ready for a shot at the next level.

And, I can see it now if he's hired... “Zduriencik thinks Randy’s ready”

Yeah, no offense to Zona fans, but I'm not really fond on anyone who coaches under Bob Melvin.

He's 57

I think the Mariners will finish in last for 4-5 consecutive years and he will be fired.

I know, I said he's 57.

Or, are you trying to make a point cause his age?

Giving any executive or head coaching job is a long term committment, I would never hire a 57-year-old for either.
