I can't think of an area with more hatred between nonconference teams. George Washington American Marlyand Baltimore County Georgetown Maryland GW knicked UMBC this season, who was in the NCAA Tournament last season. UMBC in the NCAA Tournament gave Georgetown a run for their money practically scaring them out of their pants. GW plays Maryland on Sunday. GW plays American in a couple weeks. American was in the NCAA Tournament last year. They took Tennesssee down to the final minute and return all their seniors this season. American plays UMBC right after they play us. Maryland and Georgetown are top rivals of each other, and they have only played each other 3 times in the last 30 years. Fans of these 2 schools cheer for the other to lose, constantly. In 1980, Lefty Driesell and John Thompson had an enormous falling out to the point where they couldn't possibly play each other again. Even years after this, the coaches continued to throw jabs at each other. In 1993, they were able to finally work a game out to renew it. What should have been a Georgetown blowout, Maryland made a comeback for the ages to pull off the monumental upset in Overtime. Lots of fights happened after the game and the schools had a huge controversy over ticket distribution. It ended again. The entire area was glued to the television in DC's "Game of the Century" in 2001 when the two were conveniently matched up in the NCAA Tournament. Maryland won. But this past week, they got matched up in Consolation of a Tournament in which the Hoyas whipped Maryland. There is no way there is an area in the United States with 5-team nonconference rivalries that hate each other as much as we have here. The fans are constantly fighting. |
