The Toronto Raptors fired coach Sam Mitchell on Wednesday, one day after a 39-point loss to the Denver Nuggets left the team with a losing record.

One source close to the Raptors said the players were informed of Mitchell’s dismissal then attended a meeting where longtime assistant coach Jay Triano was named interim coach.

After strengthening their frontline in the summer with a trade for center Jermaine O’Neal, the Raptors had hoped to challenge the Boston Celtics in the Atlantic Division. Star forward Chris Bosh has responded with the best season of his career and point guard Jose Calderon is an All-Star candidate, but the Raptors have struggled to an 8-9 record. The team is currently on a three-game trip through the West that has begun with lopsided losses to the Los Angeles Lakers and Nuggets.

Triano’s first game as interim coach will be Friday in Utah against the Jazz.

“This is a difficult but necessary step the franchise must take,” Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo said in a statement released by the team. “We appreciate all that Sam has done for the organization, applaud him for his successes and wish him nothing but the best with his future in basketball.”

Mitchell was 156-189 in four-plus seasons as the Raptors’ head coach. He was named Coach of the Year in 2007. The Raptors made the playoffs each of the past two seasons under Mitchell, but lost in the first round each time.

Bad, bad, BAD, move, in my opinion.

I'm in shock... Sammy was my boy. But, it was a necessary move imo. You've got CB4 playing the best ball of his life, Calderon is running the point as well as anyone in the league and Bargnani is showing glimpses of greatness. Let's not forget about JO; not having the greatest year but his presence in the post is a huge upgrade from last year. All this and the team still can't string together a decent record? It's not as if they're a shallow team who gets beat once their bench hits the floor... these guys have a decent roster all around. So, what else can you do besides blame the coach? Didn't expect Mitchell to get fired but someone has to take the heat for this disappointing start.

After last night's loss my friend was like, he'll be fired by the time we get home. He was right. GREAT GREAT GREAT MOVE! PARTY TIME! Mitchell has hurt Bargnani's development in my opinion, and this team needs the change. Though I will say its not Sam's fault Calderon gets blown by on defense EVERY POSSESSION, I can't wait for a change in philosophy on both ends.

Sometimes, you could be a good coach but your effectiveness has gotten stale in one place. This is a case of it. I hope Mitchell gets a job somewhere.
