Pitching doesn't win games. Defense doesn't win games. Clutch hitting and athleticism and grit and speed and heart and OBP and power and whatever. None of these win games. Pitchers who throw strikes don't win games, missing bats doesn't win games, pitching to contact doesn't win games. Three run homers don't win games. You know what wins games? Scoring more runs than the other team. And every single thing I listed above contributes to that, but the constant stream of generalizations and mantras I hear "we need to build like the Rays, defense and speed" or "like Beane and the Moneyball A's, OBP is the way to go" or "if our pitchers would just throw strikes we'd be so much better" blah blah blah. Every single input into scoring runs has a value. It may be hard to assess, but it's there. You can't say 'he doesn't fit our team concept' or 'we need to get athletic players at every position' or 'we need pitchers who pitch to contact'. We need good players who we got for good value and we need them to have good years. That's it. And that's hard to acquire when you're in the hole. But stop pretending that there is a right way and a wrong way to build a team. There is no absolute statement about team construction I've ever heard that isn't either tautological, trivial, or total nonsense. |

Agreed. All you need to worry about is building the best team possible. Though, some of those inputs are MUCH more valuable than others, such as OBP compared to grittyness. And there is a wrong way to build a team: ignoring any method of evaluation that has been proven to be very helpful and valuable. EDIT: And as much as fielding is still undervalued, it is quickly becoming the "you need pitching to win championships." Edited by SL, Thu Apr 2, 2009 9:57 pm.
